About the Brand

In 1969, 19-year-old Mo Siegel and his friend Wyck Hay found a bountiful harvest of wild herbs growing around Boulder, Colorado. With friends and wives helping, they picked the herbs and produced 500 pounds of their first blend, called MO's 36 Herb Tea. It was packaged in hand-sewn muslin bags and sold to a local health food store. Hay's brother, John, joined the partnership in 1971. The entrepreneurs set up shop in an old barn outside of Boulder, and they expanded their market to stores throughout Colorado, New Mexico, and the East Coast. The partners also began buying herbs rather than picking everything themselves, and the dream of a national herb tea company slowly began to materialize. This dream was reinforced when Red Zinger Herb Tea was introduced in January 1972 and was an immediate sensation. It remains one of the best-selling Celestial teas.

The company continued to grow and revolutionize the tea industry. Herb teas had previously been perceived as only of medicinal significance, but Celestial Seasonings introduced herb teas as flavorful, healthy beverages, virtually creating the modern tea industry. Celestial Seasonings solidified its sources for obtaining ingredients, such as hibiscus flowers and chamomile, by working closely with herb farmers from the Pacific Northwest to the exotic Far East. This forward thinking attracted the attention of food industry giant Kraft, Inc., which bought Celestial Seasonings in 1984. Kraft's guidance brought Celestial Seasonings to the attention of new consumers, further strengthening its lead in the herb tea industry while also introducing a gourmet line of traditional, or black, teas. In September 1988, Kraft sold Celestial Seasonings back to its management, returning the tea company to independent ownership. The company remains headquartered in Boulder, in the corporate facility on Sleepytime Drive.

The company, in 1991, experienced the exciting return of its original founder and leader, Mo Siegel, as chairman and chief executive officer. Since then, the company has expanded upon its herbal expertise bringing to market successful lines of Green, Wellness, Organic, and Chai teas. In 2000, Celestial joined forces with the Hain Food Group, maker of many top-selling natural foods brands. Today, serving more than 1.2 billion cups of tea per year, Celestial Seasonings is the largest herb tea manufacturer in North America and is expanding internationally at a rapid rate. Assured of Celestial Seasonings leadership position in the herb tea industry, Mo retired in September 2002 to fulfill another dream: to finish hiking the last set of 14,000-foot Colorado mountains he has yet to climb.

This is a very unusual tea with a combination of flavors that I've never heard of before (peppermint, cinnamon, ginger, chamomile, lemongrass, licorice and more).

This is the best tea I have tried in a long time. I'm not a big fan of "fruity" teas, and I got tired of straight chamomille. Tension Tamer is just right...just enough lemon, a hint of hibiscus...Yummy!

I am amazed by this tea. The fact that it's caffeine free is the main reason I first bought it, but being a college student, the stress relief part really caught my attention. And it works amazingly. :D I drink it whenever I have an exam the next day, or if I'm super stressed about something else going on, and the stress just melts away. It works great if you drink it while reading a book in bed, or listening to the rain at night. I was never a big believer in herbal remedies, but this tea is amazing. I just drank some and it made my migraine pretty much go away! I love you, Celestial Seasonings! Never stop making this. <3

"It may drive your cat crazy. But if you use it, it will probably have just the opposite effect on you. Catnip is a calming, safe, and mild sedative." ~ pg. 36 of God's Healing Herbs by Dennis Ellingson

Celestial Seasonings has a few wellness teas for soothing your soul. Tension Tamer Extra has a lemony herbal flavor. Peppermint, cinnamon, lemongrass, lemon flavor, ginger root, licorice, vitamin C, B6, B12, Eleuthero, Chamomile, Tilia estrella, lemon verbena, catnip and roasted chicory make this earthy and lemony with calming power.

Licorice is believed to have stress reducing properties and lemongrass makes this a lemony herb tea. Eleuthero, also known as "Siberian Ginseng" is a stress reliever but can also help improve concentration. This tea is not for children or for anyone with heart problems or high blood pressure.

Tension Tamer Extra seems to have two effects, first it calms you down emotionally and then it wakes you up intellectually. This tea might be good to drink in the evening if you want to feel peaceful, but you are not quite ready to fall asleep. I find it clears my head and helps me to focus.

Is it Tea Magic, the placebo effect, or the actual tea that creates such a relaxing feeling? I don't know, but it does! Perhaps this is ONE product that actually delivers what it suggests. If you like home delivery via Amazon at a price Lower than the retail average, you will have even more to relax about!

It works. If you have problems falling asleep, drink this stuff. It tastes pretty good and seems to soothe whatever demons you're wrestling with as you try to drift off. Almost as soothing as meditation, I'm told.

I haven't purchased this through Amazon, but I always have it on hand at home. I first purchased it when I quit smoking. With a name like 'Tension Tamer', I hoped it would take the edge off my irritability. It worked really well. In fact, two cups in a row gives me a slight, very pleasant, buzz-like high. I continue to use it for stress and panic attacks, both of which I have trouble controlling and I don't wish to be medicated for either. It has an unusual, distinctive flavor and I don't love the flavor, to be honest, but I do love the effect. For what it's worth, I am one of those people who is very sensitive to chemicals effects (a lightweight with alcohol, for example). In cool weather, I drink it hot with honey and in warm weather, I just add the honey, let it cool to room temperature, and pour over ice! Highly recommended.

I initially bought this when I was going through some whacked out 'stress' and now I just buy it for the flavor. This really is so yummers with a bit of raw honey. The aroma is heavenly too! The ginger/citrus flavor is very comforting.

A little fascinating tidbits about "eleuthero" I found on the net:

The constituents in eleuthero that have been most studied are the eleutherosides. Seven primary eleutherosides have been identified, with most of the research attention focusing on eleutherosides B and E. Eleuthero also contains complex polysaccharides (complex sugar molecules). These constituents may play a critical role in eleuthero's ability to support immune function.

Eleuthero is an "adaptogen" (an agent that helps the body adapt to stress). It is thought to help support adrenal gland function when the body is challenged by stress.

Eleuthero has been shown to enhance mental acuity and physical endurance without the letdown that comes with caffeinated products. Research has shown that eleuthero improves the use of oxygen by the exercising muscle. This means that a person is able to maintain aerobic exercise longer and recover from workouts more quickly. Preliminary research from Russia indicates it may be effective for this purpose.
