Product Description

Amazon.com

This little device (small enough for a shirt pocket) is a bright idea for teaching constellation roaming to the younger enrollees at Star Fleet Academy. Flip open the lid on any starry night, find north with the built-in compass, and insert a card for any of 20 major constellations from Andromeda to Virgo. A light (in night-vision-friendly red) illuminates the card, which maps the constellation, tells you in which months it's visible, and explains how to find it relative to the polestar. Major stars and nebulae are named. Suitable for all latitudes between 20 and 60 degrees north. The flip-open design, so reminiscent of a Star Trek communicator, can't be accidental: beam us up. --Richard Farr

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Learning Toy, November 15, 1999

I'm sure everyone remembers as a child looking up at the sky at night to find the Big Dipper, ect.. Well, that's something i'm sure that we all still do as Adults from time to time. This is a great toy for kids and Adults to find their constellations easier! A great learning toy for school project too! This would also be great to keep children busy during long car rides at night. A must have toy :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool, November 10, 2004

I actually received this product from a family member as a gift. While it is really geared for children, I was impressed with the design and functionality of the product. The red LED backlight is bright enough to identify the star charts but not so bright as to interfer with night vision. The star chart inserts show the major constellations, helping the young astronomer to learn the star patterns. Overall, its a great little learning tool.

The Celestial Seeker is ok, but not great. Mine arrived with duplicate cards for summer and winter, and no spring or autumn cards. The listed email address and web sites were invalid, so I cannot get the spring/autumn cards. That said, one must first study and memorize star placements on the cards, then look into the sky and try to find it. I don't mind doing that, but young folks may become bored rather quickly. Would be a lot easier with all four seasons' cards, though.
