Quality Mini-Scope, March 16, 2010
This review is from: Celestron 30mm Mini Brass Spotting Scope (Electronics)
I was pleasantly surprised when I got this item at the optical quality. I have a number of serious amateur scopes and binoculars and this little scope belongs with the best. And it is little, which means you can take it anywhere. The Scope itself easily fits in a man's shirt pocket.
I found it easy to use and has adequate eye-relief for a person who does not wear glasses. However, I don't think a person with glasses would find it easy to use because they might not be able to get close enough.
Near focus appears to be about 30 ft. The scope also has considerable depth of field, so you do not need to keep fiddling with the focus.
It comes with a small, simple but effective tripod which holds the scope by a standard screw fitting, and has a nice carrying bag which holds the scope and tripod.
You can use this as a hand-held scope although its magnification, 15x, is a more than I like in hand-held optics. I generally prefer lesser magnification and a larger main lens and don't care much for the standard 8x magnification of most mini binocs and the like, because they lack brightness and contrast. Neverthless this scope is keeper although I would have still preferred it at a lower magnification.
It's hard to know what is a fair price for such an item. There are a large number of 30mm brass telescoping scopes selling in the $30-$80 range that are nowhere as good as this item. I know because I have some. So if you can get this under $50.00 that is a good deal. If you really need the portability of this scope you may even be prepared to pay more.
