Product Description

Size: 16x70

Not all binoculars are created equal, especially when they are expected to perform well in low light conditions. Observations during twilight and at night require larger optics to collect as much light as possible, but big lenses alone are not enough to ensure a superior viewing experience. It also takes quality glass and rugged construction to keep your binoculars safe and working well for years to come. Celestron's large-aperture Echelon series binoculars were designed for use in low light conditions. Whether you are long-range glassing across a field or valley, or gazing at the splendors of the Milky Way, a pair of Celestron Echelon binoculars will get the job done. With an exit pupil of 4.4mm, these binoculars deliver an amazing amount of light allowing you to see the most detail possible. With the next to highest magnification in the Echelon series, the 16x70 model offers great magnification for astronomy, and provides enough power to bring small subjects into view, even at long distances.

No matter if it's fine target rifle optics, spotting scopes or astronomy gear I appreciate quality optics. I have lots of glass and some is better than others but these are certainly at the top of my collection given my initial impression of them. I received these two days ago and managed to get out last night to observe Comet 2014 Q2 Lovejoy. Despite the 13° F temperatures and the Gibbous Moon, these binoculars performed admirably. My other pair of hand held optics is a pair of Steiner 8X32 Military Marine binoculars. They showed a good view of the comet, but are no where near the quality. As an example, the Steiners show lots of blooming if I use them at night to look at any artificial light, like street lights or headlights. It's incredibly distracting the way they handle stray light in the optical path. The Echelons however are substantially better than the Steiners in this regard. I don't know if it's the coatings, baffling or blackening of the edges of the prisms, but stray light and blooming was significantly reduced in comparison to the Steiners and made me realize that despite the name, the low price point Steiners are not of the same pedigree as their larger binos. I used in the service.

The Echelons are solidly constructed but not too heavy to hand hold. I believe they are made of aluminum instead of magnesium so they have a solid heft. The black overmolded rubber is firm and not spongy. They are delivered in a nice foam lined polycarbonate case. Not quite Pelican quality but nice nonetheless. I'm not impressed by the objective lens caps. They are functional but tight fitting. A little too tight, but they stay on the objective lenses.

After enjoying the comet, I decided to take a look at the Moon to see if I could detect any false color fringing.

These binoculars are incredible. The image quality is absolutely fantastic, sharp and clear. I already own the Celestron Spymaster 20x80s but wanted something that was higher quality and capable of being used without a tripod (though they are heavy). I'm happy to say I found it with these Echelons. Compared to the bigger binoculars these produce a sharper image without any noticeable chromatic aberration. I'm a light sensitive person, so it may just may be me, but I find the light-gathering ability of these too great for midday terrestrial viewing. The optics also focus individually so birdwatchers might find them frustrating, but for those like me that are only looking at objects a quarter of a million miles away and beyond, they won't disappoint.

Very well made. These binoculars look like they are high end and they are. I thought the optics looked very good for sky viewing.

could not get the focus to adjust properly, also adusting two oculars is a major pain , because you get one thing adjusted then you pan to something else you must refocus everytime!

Hello Donald,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble adjusting your Echelon. Echelon is an individual focus binocular that requires both eyepieces to be adjusted to focus. At very long distances, the focus should not have to be constantly adjusted (if conditions are good). If conditions are bad, your image quality will suffer no matter how much you try to adjust the focus, which is one of the downfalls of long-range glassing. Like all binoculars, when you are focusing on subjects from close to mid-range, the focus will have to adjusted every time the binocular is moved.

Our Technical Support team can help you with focusing and adjusting your binoculars. Feel free to contact them by visiting Celestron.com and clicking on Support in the upper right corner. Also, remember that your Echelon binoculars have a limited lifetime warranty.
