Product Description

Also called a dew shield, a lens shade is an essential accessory that protects your optical tube from excess moisture forming condensation on the corrector lens. A lens shade also helps block out stray light outside the path of the telescope for better viewing and astroimaging. This versatile lens shade can accommodate both 6" and 8" Schmidt-Cass grain optical tubes. Choose the outer Velcro strip for larger tubes and the inner strip for smaller tubes to customize your fit. Also compatible with the 8" EdgeHD optical tube.

Holds back dew very well on Celestron NexStar 8 SE Telescope. It also functions very well to keep stray light from coming in. During heavy dew, the shade will also get dew on it, so bring a rag to wipe it down.

The easiest way to get it on the telescope for a tight fit is to preform it by lining up the velcro strap so that the tub is straight and not making a cone shape. Then once done, put the tube on a flat surface, face the front of your scope downwards, and use the weight of the telescope with additional pressure to slide the the shade onto the end of the scope. Make sure you line up the notch too or else you'll have to do it over. Doing it this way ensures a tight fit and prevents the shade from sagging and if pushing too hard, moving the tripod legs.

I stopped mounting the shade onto the telescope when the telescope was setup because it puts stress onto the gears and the assembly.

I only gave it 4 stars because it should be priced at $15.

I purchased this lens shad after I experienced problems with rapid condensation while trying to photograph Jupiter in the early hours of the morning. I'm glad to say that with the assistance of this shade I was able to capture my picture without experiencing further condensation problems. With the shade in place the condensation rate is drastically lower. It also helps to prevent light from stray sources from coming in contact with the aperture of the telescope.

The shade has a notch in it so that it will fit better over the the dovetail mount of the lens. While Celestron recommends this shade for the CGEM series of telescopes the notch on the shade is not made to fit around the mount. Never the lest it fits sufficiently well, though I would want it to fit better.

I use this on my 8" Celestron and it does the job of significantly slowing dew buildup on the corrector plate. This shield appears to be ruggedly made and the velcro closure holds tightly. Interior padding on the scope end of the shield helps keep it snug while preventing damage to the OTA.

Like all dew shields it will make your scope front-heavy. Unless you're using heavy Nagler-type eyepieces you'll probably need to re-balance the mount a little to compensate. I also recommend storing this item flat in its original plastic sleeve. If you store it with the Velcro hooked [as shown in the picture] it will go out of round over time.

All in all, an effective and inexpensive solution to a common problem with SCTs.

Honestly I was skeptical that such a simple thing could keep dew off the collector plate. But it works like a champ! I live in humid Florida and can now observe for hours without having to blow dry it or point the OTA down and wait...

Where I live at we have large temp changes from day to night. When that happens, and humidity is above 40%, dew collects on EVERYTHING.
SO for my Ultima 8, I had to get the dew shield.
Sure lots of people can make one, or people have all sorts of ideas of how to work round that.

My point is: This is not an expensive addition to the telescope. it visually is aesthetically pleasing, as it matches the Optical tube.

Fitment is perfect and functions flawlessly.
Why haggle over $23.00 when EP's are hundreds?

I would rather spend the time looking at the sky, than taping cardboard together for a dew shield.
Go with manufacturer approved items, and you won't de disappointed.

I like my telescope like my women.

ACCESSORIZED!

This device works but it looks funny. It is not each to see the construction of this shade by viewing the image of online. There are two strips of Velcro fuzz and one strip of hooks. support for 6-8" telescope is done by used one set of fuzz or the other. The notch OR the Velcro and Celestron name are not well placed. When installed with the notch (cut-out) in the right place the Celestron name is upside down. Could be poor design planning OR sloppy construction. Ultimately the Velcro works and the shade mounds on the telescope so it is functional but lacking in most every other way.

Also fits the 6 and 8 se orange tubes too. I like it more than my astrozap branded one because of the ability to use it on multiple scopes. I would recommend it and if I ever need another I'd order this one again.
