Amazon.com Product Description

Simply put, the Celestron 72013 Regal LX 8 x 42 Waterproof Binoculars is one of the finest, top-of-the-line binoculars you will find anywhere at this price. The Regal series has long been revered by serious bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts for their premium quality and affordable prices, but with the Regal LX Series, Celestron has set the bar even higher.

The Regal LX binoculars feature BAK-4 prisms and are fully multicoated and phase coated, giving the exquisitely crafted optics. Other enhancements in features include a super high reflectivity coating on the prism surface that gives you brighter daytime and nighttime images; a continuous spectrum high transmission lens coating to ensure natural color balance across the entire visible spectrum; and an aspheric eyepiece lens for pinpoint images across the entire field of view. Nitrogen-filled and completely waterproof, these binoculars will be your greatest companion when you're ready to tackle the elements.

The Celestron 72013 features an 8x magnification and an objective lens diameter of 42 millimeters, giving it a 5.3 millimeter exit pupil. (The exit pupil size -- the diameter of the objective lens divided by the magnification -- determines the amount of light available to your eye. The larger the exit pupil, the brighter the image obtained will be. A three-millimeter exit pupil is generally sufficient for daytime use, five-millimeters is suitable for daytime and twilight, and seven-millimeters is generally necessary for maximum nighttime or astronomy use.) All Regal DX series models also come with Celestron's No Fault Limited Lifetime Warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value, February 4, 2008

This review is from: Celestron Regal LX 8x42 Waterproof Binoculars (Electronics)
As I have become a more avid birder I was feeling the need to upgrade my old entry-level Pentax binoculars to something nicer. I was prepared to pay between $500 and $700, but then I found the Celestron Regal LX's. These have all the qualities of a good mid-range binocular at an entry-level price. The original retail price was in the $700 range, but my purchase price through Amazon was closer to $160. I can only surmise that the deep discounting is due to the fact that Celestron has discontinued this model.

The binoculars are very comfortable to use, reasonably small and lightweight. Nitrogen-purged and sealed, they are waterproof, so no worries about birding in the rain or a quick drop into the water. The diopter setting is done with a click-wheel type mechanism, which works very well and tends to stay in place once set (my Pentax binos would always lose the diopter setting). Eye relief is variable based on pulling the eyepieces out or pushing them in; easy enough. The strap, eyepiece covers, and case are all nice.

The best thing about these binoculars is the optics, of course. After years of looking through decent but not great binoculars, I was very happy to see how bright and clear the image is in this pair. As crisp as a top-end set of Swarovskis or Leicas? No, but you can buy 10 of these for one of those!

All in all a tremendous value. Pick up a pair before they are gone for good.

A birder friend had these binoculars and after using them I bought two for my husband and myself. They are light weight and the view through them is very sharp, bright, and clear. I am so glad to have them.
