Good for class- too long for the Boards,

If you are a starting MS1 this is a good book to use for class as it has alot of good detail condensed in an outline format. It comes with a CD that has been quite helpful. However, when it comes to the Boards is just too big of a book for a subject that is not high yield- think about it- this book is just as big as BRS Path. Do you really have that much time to read a low yield subject? No. So instead for Histo- I recommend using a smaller book to review for the boards: I recommed Road Maps: Histo as opposed to High Yield Histo.

All You'll Need for Microanatomy,
By
This review is from: BRS Cell Biology and Histology (Board Review Series) (Paperback)
I admit, I'm a bit biased here because for my Microanatomy class we were assigned Gartner & Hiatt's Color Textbook of Histology. Since they wrote this as well, it was a great companion to the textbook. In fact, the organization is essentially (if not exactly) identical, & in this format you're given everything you need to study in under 20 pages rather than in several long chapters. This book was a lifesaver for me. I used it in conjunction with BRS Phys - get the physiology down pat, then completing the story by going through all the different cell types discussed in this book. It's a fast, clear read with some great clinical correlations at the end of each chapter. My only complaint would be that the review questions tend to focus solely on the page or so of CCs at the end & less on the concepts presented in the outlines. If you have a Cell Bio course separate from your Micro or Histo course (as I did), I don't know if the Cell Bio coverage (only 3 chapters) will be sufficiently in depth, but what's there is definitely high yield. Bottom line - you'll definitely want this book if you're using G&H's text. If not, I thought it was a great (& fast) review book for the NBME, & ultimately worth the money regardless of your assigned text.

Better than Kaplan's review for Histology.,

A must have. Really important and understandable facts in the light of USMLE. I'm reading some other books on this subject too, and I have inferred that this one is very good.

This was a great review for histo. The text is easy to understand and the questions after each section, as well in the back of the book, are very helpful. I got through it in one and a half days and felt like I had a good grasp on its content. The only problem was that the standardized microbiology/histo test we took contained much information not found in this book.

Very good for Histology,

This book is broken into systems and has nice board related pathology info at the end of each chapter. Exp: The Chapter on Neuro Histology will give you a clear understanding of the histo, physio, and then give pathology examples such as what happens when there is demyelination->MS.
I was never taught histology, but this book is so well laid out, I could make the correlation between histo, phys, and path. Excellent resource if you want to understand histo in a short period of time. I see where other people say it's not high-yield enough. That may be true. But what's the point of memorizing specific details if you don't understand the big concepts they pertain to. If you have a strong background in histo then I would recommend something else. I just feel this book has made me understand phyio and path so much better. It's like biochem. Gives you better insight on the mechanisms of pathophys. I was very disappointed with BRS Phys, but BRS Cell Bio and Histo is the real deal. I would scrap BRS Phys and just buy the Histo one.

A good board review book for histo/cell bio,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cell Biology and Histology (Paperback)
I felt that this was a good book to use for board review purposes. The outline format, like all the BRS books, is easy to follow and makes it easy to look up info. The end of chapter questions are the best part by allowing you to see if you really understood what you just read. It does not have the number and quality of pictures that a good atlas would have but it is a good book to use to supplement a histo atlas.

I think that this book is an ok review book, but a bit to superficial to use when learning histology. I recommend purchasing a larger text book to learn histology... I wish I had. The students in my class that read larger histology text books did much better in histology and subsequently pathology than I did.

First year med student,

I have used many of the BRS books for class (the physio one is great!), but this one I found to be confusing and disorganized. It was not pertinent to the material covered on the USMLE or in microbio. I would probably recommend finding another book to study with (in our school we studied more hitsology than cell bio, so it depends on your curriculum).

Just excellent!!! At med school you have very little time to assimilate your readings...This book helps a lot in summarizing lectures and Histology textbooks!!!!

Super for the boards,

I found this book to be really helpful. I know people who used some other books to prepare for histology and regretted it. The book is laid out in outline manner which makes finding information easy. The questions were just like the kinds I encountered on my Step I exam. I highly recommend this book.
