This, like many of the BBC recordings which I know of, is excellent. The cello soloist gives a lovely, human performance, the orchestra is exquisitely balanced. The Hindemith Variations are fantastic - a revelation to me, who of all of Walton's music I have heard - which is not much - have only ever liked the cello concerto. What's additionally great about this recording is there is a live feel to it. The sound does not feel doctored up, or augmented by any studio tricks. I only give it four stars because I don't like the sound of "bel canto"- ie legitimate operatic singing tones in 20th century music. It doesn't work for me. You may love it.
