Biography

Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, in 1913. Although he was already composing vigorously as a child, he nonetheless felt the importance of some solid guidance and in 1928 turned to the composer Frank Bridge; two years later he went to the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Arthur Benjamin, Harold Samuel and John Ireland. While still a student, he wrote his ... Read more in Amazon's Benjamin Britten Store

If you are a fan of the cello repetoire, this CD is a must. Britten's cello suites are definitely influenced by Bach's cello suites, especially with regard to the structure of the works. His cello muse (Rostropovich) has encouraged Britten to explore the dark and textured sounds of the modern cello. This recording gives permanence to some of the best cello playing I have ever heard. The Sonata with Britten at the piano is magnificent as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Maestro plays the Maestro November 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These may be definitive performances. They sound really good and you get the advantage of hearing them played by Rostropovich. Britten wrote them for him; so, this is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars The missing third June 18, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Beautiful music played heavenly...
Britten's cello works come often in my hands on different CD-s. Either one of the 3 suites as part of a compilation, mostly all three as they belong together. Does anybody know the reason why Rostopowich plays only two suites? (I at least could not find any recording with him performing all at once...)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my very favourite cds. January 25, 1999

These pieces of music remind me of the Bach cello works. The playing is vital.
