If you're looking for a nice-looking coffee table centerpiece or a time-killing activity, then Celtic Challenge may be something you're interested in. However, if you're looking for an actual game that contains even a basic level of skill or strategy, keep looking.

This game is almost entirely luck-driven making it a game that really just plays itself. Every game only requires 6 decisions from the player and those decisions are often obvious based on the tiles showing on the board. Once you decide which symbol to play, you simply clear off the corresponding tiles and flip over the new ones (and clearing off any newly upturned tiles with the choosen symbol and continuing like that until you can't clear off any more tiles). The act of clearing and flipping and clearing more tiles ideally creates "runs" but it's pure luck if you manage to put together big runs since you have no idea what the tiles will be until they are flipped. Since the tiles get stacked on themselves in 3 layers, and since you have to clear the top layers off in order to expose the lower tiles, a truly random board setup practically guarentees a zero-win condition. A game that has almost no hope of winning is just not fun in my opinion.

The game claims to be 1-2 players but this really is a solitaire game if you can even call it a game at all. In 2 player, you take turns with the rounds (so the first player will play Rounds 1,3, and 5 while the second player plays Rounds 2,4 and 6). I played this variant many times and discovered that the first player is at a huge disadvantage. The first round penalizes the first player since you only have 4 tiles showing and so would rarely pick up more than 2-3 tiles the first round.

This is an OK game. My girlfriend received Celtic Challenge for christmas and we opened it and played a few rounds today. It's a tactile game that is pleasant to interact with. The board is nicely finished and engraved. The pieces are resin I think, and have a nice texture like carved bone or antler. The gameplay is simple to learn and requires a bit of strategy to play, but the thrills don't last very long. We could only play a few times before we both got bored and found something else to do. Overall, it looks nice but I don't imagine playing this one much in the future.

Well made as described by other reviewers. Very simple to play. The only strategy I found was not picking up a tile to mix up the gameplay.
