Celtic Cross Stitch,
By A Customer
This review is from: Celtic Cross-Stitch (Paperback)
This isn't the greatest book on Celtic stitchery out there. It doesn't claim to be. It's a book of the authors interpretations of the celtic style. While most may not be historically accurate in the least, there are some nice charts in the book that are beautiful and inspired. The charts themselves range from easy to mid-level in difficulty. While I was very disappointed with the knotwork, I love working with the bright colors and the interesting designs. I have stitched two designs from the book and have been very happy with them.

Authentic Celtic this book is not,

I was very disappointed with this book. The use of pastel colours has no precedence in Celtic art. Also, the fact that nothing in the book, none of the knot work, is symetrical! Obviously the designer had not looked at any Celtic art before he did this book.

Very basic charts,

I was disappointed by these charts. They are not very complex, and there is very little of the traditional knotwork patterns, which is what I was hoping for. The charts are easy to read, and it would be a good book for a beginner/intermediate stitcher.

Celtic Cross Stitch by Vickery,

I love this book! Well done patterns (with the exception of a small printing problem with the alphabet letter I). I'm doing them all and love them and the information Mr. Vickery gives throughout the book. Very well illustrated, easy to follow instructions.

A nice introduction to Celtic designs,

I like this book. I have worked two of the letters in the celtic alphabet and they turned out nicely. The designs are fun and whimsical and not too complex. There are some small errors in the charts however so look them over carefully before you begin.

GREAT BOOK!!,

I LOVE the designs in this book! I have several other Celtic design books, and have not found the wide range as seen in this book. No - they are not traditional Celtic designs, but a great adaptation of them. I love the colors, the brief captions about Celtic lore. All in all, I LOVE this book! Great deisgns, and great use of color. Much better than the offerings from Dover Needlepoint.

Not for beginners, Not necessarily what I was expecting,

Two, and only two complaints here: 1) These patterns are not for beginners. They are full to the brim of half-stitches, which are quite difficult to execute on standard Aida fabric. 2) I got this book hoping for knot designs, and it contains almost none. There were, in fact, only a small handfull of designs that fit my pre-conception of "celtic design." Aside from that, it's a great book. The illustrations are done very nicely, the charts are full color, and all the little details about materials and counts and everything are in place. Still... I liked the Reader's Digest published "Celtic Cross Stitch : 30 Alphabet, Animal, and Knotwork Projects" much, much better.

changed my mind,

about this book; the patterns are wonderful but need some adaptation for more traditional colors; the patterns do not give credit to the powerful role of Celtic women but some figures are easily adapted to do so......
