Book Description

Northumbria Community May 3, 2005
Thoughts, prayers and readings for every day of the year, both morning and evening, with Celtic themes and inspiration, from the Northumbria Community. Celtic Daily Prayer offers an alternative to the cult of the new, drawing on the live of the Celtic Saints, as well as many other writers and thinkers down the ages, to help the modern pilgrim find solid ground in their daily walk with God. It is a unique resource for personal and group devotions, both for daily use and on special occasions. Based around the order for morning and evening prayer, it provides a two year cycle of daily Bible readings, each accompanied by an insightful commentary or quotation. There are liturgies for seasonal events like Easter and Christmas

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant start to the day, December 27, 2010
This review is from: Celtic Daily Prayer (Northumbria Community) (Paperback)
A friend of mine suggested that I get this book to help with my daily quiet time, because I was struggling to find something to hang my routine on without becoming stale.

This was definitely the answer!

A short set of liturgy with picturesque language ("Christ as a light, Christ as a shield" for example)followed by readings designated for each day of the year, both from Scripture and poems or thoughts from medieval religious figures (such as Aidan or Cuthbert or the like), then a time of intercessions that are open to your own materials or impromptu prayer, closing with blessings.

It takes about 15 minutes if I have a short time of intercessions.

My only complaint -- and it's why I gave it only 4 stars -- is that the paperback is soon losing its morning-prayer pages since I refer to them everyday, so I wonder if the hardback wouldn't be a better choice. In the meantime, I'm tempted to take them out and laminate them for daily use, saving the rest of the book for their fascinating, inspiring readings.
