Editorial Reviews

One cue that this video isn't like ordinary instructional dance videos is the fact that the instructor, Riverdance-featured dancer Colin Dunne, appears, not in a small dance studio, but on a real stage, around which are gathered real, expectant audience members. As it turns out, this video works best as a performance, not as a how-to guide. Dunne, handsome and animated, with flourishes to spare, is a lot of fun to watch--but only experienced dancers are likely to find this video truly instructional. Dunne's method is to slowly walk through each set of steps just once, and then the music revs up and the feet, as the saying goes, start flying (Dunne is accompanied by his accomplished Celtic Feet dancers). True beginners will be bewildered, although frequent use of the remote to rewind can help. And it is pretty dazzling to watch Dunne and his dancers when they really let loose--the compelling combination of still upper body and wildly flying legs and feet is irresistible. But those who really want to learn the steps themselves might also want to check out Seamus Kerrigan's Irish Dancing Made Easy. --Anne Hurley

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT for a beginner, April 23, 2000
This review is from: Celtic Feet [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you want to learn the basics of Irish dance, this is not a good choice. Colin is an extremely gifted dancer and his moves are impressive. However, he flies through the steps far too quickly and you will find yourself hitting rewind over and over and OVER to pick up a step.

If you are already familiar with all the basic steps, this could be a good tape to practice along with and enhance what you've learned elsewhere.

Incidentally, the quality of the video isn't great - the lighting is poor and it seems more like a home video than a professional recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm only seven years old, but..., March 12, 2000

I think Celtic Feet is helpful, even if you don't know anything about Irish Dancing. Using both hard and soft shoes, Colin Dunne introduces three basic steps, then gives you lots of opportunities to try them out. If you're looking for your first Irish Dance video, and you're over six years old, I recommend you consider this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good For Those Who Know Basic Irish Dance Already, March 6, 2003
By
This review is from: Celtic Feet [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was looking forward to this video. Knowing nothing of how to Irish Dance (except for my free imitations done watching others), I bought this video thinking I might learn how to do some basic steps. Unfortunately, this is not a good video to learn by. Learning videos need a little bit of a boring quality, that is, watching from one camera angle one full practice step done slowly to rythm. But we never see the beginning steps done simply to rythm by one person; we jump from Mr. Dunne to the right, to the left, full body, just the feet, the others, which makes all of this more confusing. It seems like the director did not know if he was going to teach or entertain. However, if you are already an intermediate to professional Irish dancer already, I recommend this video. Or, if you want to enjoy watching how Irish dance is learned by professional dancers, but have no intention to get out of the sofa and try it, I recommend it.
p.s. - Do you think you could make another video called "Jig for Dummies"? That I would buy
