4.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Know Why, But I Bought This, January 11, 2010

I've been a student and travelled a good bit in England, Scotland and Wales, and recognized the Green Man motif of this bottle opener. We needed a bottle opener in a wine cellar (which is part beer cellar), and those clever folks at Amazon somehow got me to click "Add to Cart" for a $27 bottle opener. I'm happy to say that (i) it is well made and (ii) it actually opens bottles. It is really quite fetching, and a nice conversation piece. The conversation usually goes like this. "Guest: Where's the bottle opener? Me: There [pointing]. The Green Man. Guest: Oh! What's this suppose to be? Me: The Green Man. Guest: Oh."

I've seen the other reviews, and discretion encourages me to avoid arguing the symbolic significance of the Green Man, Celtic or not, with someone from Princeton, at least where BOTTLE OPENERS are involved. Sheesh.

I bought this as a holiday gift for my son. It is quite heavy and solid, not at all flimsy. I think it will be attractive on the wall in his bar area and provide a very functional bottle opener. It's not flashy. Between parties it will be a discreet gargoyle. There is something very appropriate, if a bit pagan about a Green Man beer opener.

The Green Men found hidden in the elaborate scroll-work on ancient English churches are certainly pagan, but by no means necessarily Celtic. The idea may go back to the original indigenous inhabitants of the British Isles, such as those who built Stonehenge. They were overrun by Celts, Romans, Saxons, Angles, Danes, and Normans (in that order), but their culture persisted through two millennia, and may have had practitioners enough even in Normal times to sneak a few of their idols into Christian icoonography.
