An Unexpected Pleasure,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Celtic Love Songs (Audio CD)
This was one of those serendipitious times where I bought a CD on a whim because I had heard the music of one of the songs ( not even the lyrics ) and it turned out to be one of my favorites .... If you can listen to Bridget O' Mally and not get a lump in your throat ..... well, you just ain't human.

Fun and variety--Celtic music with words!,

I must admit I purchased this CD because I like words with my Celtic music. (Fastest way to bore me is with one of those reel sets that goes on for 11 minutes with no vocals...!) Since then it's definitely grown on me, not as authentic historical music (which it's largely not, unless your idea of history is fairly recent), but as something fun and full of variety and melody to help pass the time.Favorite parts of this recording: the two Steeleye Span tracks (which both give the lie to the misconception that Steeleye Span puts ugly thumping bass and electric guitars on every piece they do!), the two stellar Voice Squad tracks, Maddy Prior/Tim Hart's "I Live Not Where I Love", a plaintive a capella version of "Banks of the Lee" by Arcady, and a summery and sweetly-done "Ned of the Hill" by Cathie Ryan. My only irritant on this recording is the first track, which features a singer who has that annoying type of Irish accent where every single word ends in a drawn-out nasal "NNNnnnnnnn" sound. You know, "Todnnnnnn's sweennnnnn rurallnnnnnn shadnnnnnnnnnnnn..." Somehow I've never gotten used to that. But the rest of the tracks are romantic and fun, and really get you into the Celtic feeling. This would be great pre-Renaissance Faire fare. I sometimes listen to it on my way to SCA events, if I feel like lightening up by staying away from my recordings of pre-1600 music. (And even if cornered, I will never admit to this at an event, so don't ask!)

Great selection of lovely songs,
By Myra Schjelderup "Ignolopi" (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)

The selections in this album are fantastic. Being love songs they are mostly sad, mostly beautiful.
Highlights: All Things Are Quite Silent and Dark-Eyed Sailor. These introduced me to Steeleye Span, for which I am forever grateful! The first is a story of sorts, where the love is taken away to be a soldier and she must wait for his return. The Banks Of The Lee. So beautiful. The Cocks Are Crowing. A cappella, a version of Silver Dagger, sounds upbeat, is beautiful. Ay Fond Kiss, same group, very pretty. I Live Not Where I Love. Pretty. The rest of the songs are good, make no mistake. Thanks to this CD I was led to seek out more music by Boys Of The Lough, Steeleye Span, Arcady, Silly Wizard, Cathie Ryan, The Voice Squad, Planxty, Maddy Prior (of Steeleye), and Solas. Clannad was already a favorite. If you love Celtic music, Irish music, or love songs, I highly recommend this CD to you!
