Celtic Storms

Darina O'Malley watched the sun set in the bay from the great tower in O'Malley castle - saying a silent prayer for her cousin Kyra and hoping the message that was delivered to the MacCahan's did not spell sudden doom for her and her people. If what her Uncle Ruarc had told her was true, she was to be married to a stranger in less than five days and her world would turn upside down.

The realization that her clan held secrets which could destroy them forever chilled her blood. Who was this son of a Laird she was betrothed to and how would he react when he learned the truth?

AWARDED: #3 BEST BOOKS OF FEBRUARY, 2012

5 STARS Great start for a new author. This author has a story to tell - and we should listen. ~ PJ Barton

5 STARS "I thoroughly enjoyed Celtic Storms and am way past anticipating the second in the series. I have read historical romance for over twenty years and the way the author transformed the genre and included paranormal elements (witchcraft, ESP, druidism, shape-shifting, etc.) was impressive." A. Johnstone

5 STARS I couldn't put this book down - and I can't wait for the next in the series. Combines all the best of highlander romance with a paranormal twist that will leave you breathless! ~ J. Thompson

5 STARS "An EXCELLENT beginning to what is sure to become a best selling series. Celtic Storms wonderfully and seamlessly crosses the genres of romance, historical fiction and paranormal adventure. I can't wait for the next one!" ~ C. Chase

WHAT IS CELTIC STORMS?
"A fantasy novel with strong female characters."
"An intriguing work of science fiction and romance."
"A vivid trip through history with witches and wizards."

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs an editor! February 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am reading this and have found many grammatical errors. "Waste" for "waist", "he" instead of "him", etc. Also, in the scene where Darina bursts in on Kyra in the bathtub, it says, 'I'll let you get dressed, then we will talk, Kyra,' and with that Kyra left." Darina is the one who left.

I haven't finished the book and am not sure if I will. I cannot stand this type of error when I read. Am I too picky? I don't think so. I think the majority of readers are that picky. I am interested in the story, but this distracts from it so much.

Update: Waste for waist, bare for bear... Please get a new editor. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Unfinished February 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This reads like an incomplete early draft rushed into publication. Were you behind in meeting the deadline? It would have been better if you waited to complete the story first.

Celtic Steel is listed as the first book in a series of five in the Celtic Storms Series, so there must be more, however the author did not seem to know where to end this book or to start with the next. It doesn't end with a cliff-hanger, as the author has such a momentum built, you go right over the cliff into an abyss with nothing to hang on to.

We are cheated with the wedding and the wedding night - it is told to us in a ridiculous flash back, during a public interrogation. All good romance stories give the reader the wedding and the romance and the... well, you know.

The use of Flash-back is too gimmicky in this story. While trying to introduce too many 'main characters' in this first book, everything is told in flash-back. Some of the characters' back stories could either be moved to a later book, or been told in a Prolouge to get us up to speed. Tell the story, we will read it.

Spelling, grammar, syntax and 'remaining in the speech of the period and location' need more follow-up and consistency. The setting and time period is rife with legend, as well as fact and colorful language for the author to build upon. The story has some pretty good bones and many interesting characters. I am a fan of strong female leads, in non-stereotypical roles. This story just needs proper editing and knitting of perhaps the five books into maybe three.

I hope the author will re-work this, have it properly edited, and re-release it as a completed trilogy or series. I am having a difficult time getting started on a new book, as I feel I haven't yet finished this one. I do want more.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's just....bad. June 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I really do hate to give bad reviews, but I can't in good conscience let the glowing reviews of this book go unchallenged. Except for the basic story which COULD have been very good, there is nothing about this book to recommend it. It's confusing. It jumps around so much that I never felt connected with any of the characters...good grief, there are too many of them!...nor do I give a whip about a single one of them. As someone else mentioned, the main character's studder was annoying and not even remotely endearing. In fact, neither of the "main" characters were in any way endearing. I say "main" because, well, when reading this there are so very many "main" characters that one is not really quite sure who the main "main" characters ARE.=)

Oh, and if you are reading this hoping for a romantic story, look elsewhere. Unless you think two people having relations in a bath tub with zero lead up, zero relationship, and no meaningful dialog is...uh...romantic. Yeah, me either.

Now, having said this, I am going to attempt to read the second book to see if it gets any better. It was free on my kindle so no harm, no foul. The basic background story is a good one, it's the telling of it that is very badly done. Perhaps the second book will redeem the first, though I am seriously doubtful.

Update: Later today (haha)
I grabbed a cool drink, and my Kindle with Celtic Storms Book 2 installed on it, and went out to sit by the pool. I got perhaps 4 chapters into the story and wanted to toss the book into the deep end. It was like rereading Bk 1, but with very poorly written (not to mention...deadly dull) detail added. Arg. Boooooooring. I have a feeling that this author will get better with time, but until she does so, I will be reading elsewhere.

Needless to say, I will not be finishing book 2.
