This review is from: Cendrillon : A Caribbean Cinderella (Hardcover)
This is a wonderfully rich retelling of the traditional French Cinderella story, set in the Caribbean. As a school librarian I've shared this title with students to compare it to the traditional version. They love it! The pronunciation guide in the back is most helpful. The story is unique because it is from the point of view of the spunky godmother. Pinkney's scratchboard illustrations are perfect!

I think Cendrillon is a great book if you like Cinderella. I think Robert D. San Souci the auther did a great job. It is very alike with Cinderella and very different.
Mannin's mother dies and gives her something very special. Cendrillon's mother died soon after. Her father maried a madame. Madame has a child. They have a party. The Madame and her daughter get invited to a ball. Cendrillon really wants to go. Mannin helps her get to the ball. I feel that it is very ezciting. I like the pictures in the book Cendrillon because they are colorful and detailed. By: Magen

Cendrillon "looks like me",
By Mrs. B (Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cendrillon: A Caribbean Cinderella (Paperback)
I quite enjoyed this Caribbean version of Cinderella. As a white parent of a Haitian child, I found this story to remind my daughter of the country in which she was born. The illustrations and the language all contribute to a new perspective on a familiar story that engages the reader completely. We quite enjoyed seeing a "familiar" fairy tale re-told with a "new" heroine. My daughter quite enjoyed seeing a Cendrillon that "looks like me."

This review is from: Cendrillon: A Caribbean Cinderella (Paperback)
Author, Robert D. San Souci uses a touch of sarcasm in his voice as he retells this Caribbean version of Cinderella. The sarcasm adds an element of humor and makes this rendition more appealing to young readers. Teachers and readers can use an index in the back of the book to explain the Creole words in the story. The large number of Creole words helps to authenticate this story. There are many similarities between the Caribbean version of Cinderella and Disney's. The nanny uses a magical wand to change a breadfruit into a gilded coach. The breadfruit resembles a small pumpkin except for the fact that the breadfruit grows on a tree instead of a vine. The only main differences between this retelling of Cinderella is that there is only one stepsister, the glass slipper is a pink embroidered slipper, and the godmother is a wacky nanny with a sense of humor. The illustrator uses scratchboard, luma dyes, goache, and oil paints to create these magical illustrations for this wonderful picture book. By Jill Griffin 6 10, 2007

The godmother's story - in the Caribbean!,
This review is from: Cendrillon: A Caribbean Cinderella (Paperback)
This is a very interesting take on CINDERELLA.
What I enjoyed as much as the Caribbean take and flavor, was the the story was told from the perspective of the godmother. Here, she's not so much a fairy, and a kindly lady in Cendrillon's life, who has inherited a magic rod of wood. I liked the way elements of the traditional tale were woven in, and I liked how the author seamlessly wove in his won take.

Ravishing colors, strokes of Caribbean, the illustrator is at his best here. And the story, told by Cinderella's godmother, has a totally different ring to the usual, passive, goody-goody Cinderella.
The ending changes the whole outlook on this classic fairytale. If you're tired of telling the same Cinderella story over and over again to your princess-toddler and you're longing for more... color, go for it.

If you liked cinderella you will love cendrillon. It's Cinderella back in action, but on the island of Martinique. Read this revue.
Like all princess stories there's fairytale love. This book is about an evil step mother and a evil step sister taking over a little girls life by making her a maid. The little girl has a godmother. Her godmother has a special wand her mom gave her.The little girl's step mom won't let Cendrillon go to the ball. Will she go to the ball? Will her godmother use the wand on her? But theres one thing i forgot to tell you something the godmother can only use the wand on someone she loves. So can she use the wand? That is the question? I thought this book was great!!!! I thought it was so cool how they put of the laugene of Martnque in the book. The pitures were great too. From:Weasel

There was once a girl and her god mother and they worked for the girls step mother. Her step mother was really mean. Her step mother was very mean. The step mother didn't want Cendrillion to go the ball. The washer woman turns into a fairy god mother, and sends Cendrillion to the ball. She looks as a princess would look when she went to the ball. She had a very nice dress. She road in very fancy carriage. She danced all night until twelve o'clock. She was leaving and lost one of her slippers. The prince goes through out the town looking all over for his bride to be. He tries to find out which foot fits the slipper. Her step sister tries the slipper on. The god mother says "It would only fit you if you cut off your toes". The god mother ran all the way upstairs to find Cendrillion. She found her in her room, and dragged her down the stairs. She went and saw her beloved the prince. The prince asked her to try on the beautiful slipper. She said yes. It was a perfect fit! Then they asked to get married. They got married at the princes kingdom. They had a party after the wedding. They lived happily ever after! We suggest this book to people who like fairy tales.By:The Snowboarder Kids |
