Cenere 2011 NR

(1) IMDb 6.5/10

Cenere is a 1916 silent film directed by and starring Febo Mari. It is adapted from the 1904 novel by the Nobel Prize-winning Sardinian writer Grazia Deledda. It is notable as the only film performance by of the Italian theater star Eleonora Duse. For many years I searched to find a copy of this silent film to compose a musical score that would capture the emotion of the film. ~Richard Souther

I had no idea that there was motion picture evidence of the acting of Eleonora Duse. Here she is in the blood. And the acting is not the stock gestures and overacting that we are used to from silent pictures, but something much closer to what we are used to seeing as acting. She is a revelation. Giving this stars is of little use, as the plot is this, but the acting is a revelation.
