Book Description

0495502359 978-0495502357 February 12, 2008 6
Study ethics from one of the classic texts, written by one of contemporary philosophy's most skilled teachers, Louis P. Pojman, and now revised by best-selling author and editor of the INTERNET ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY, James Fieser. ETHICS: DISCOVERING RIGHT AND WRONG, Sixth Edition, provides you with a concise yet comprehensive overview of the fundamental objectives and outlooks of ethical theory. Written in a conversational manner with strong learning aids and numerous classical and contemporary examples, this book teaches you how to develop your own moral theories and competently reason through ethical problems for yourself. The text even-handedly raises critical questions with its non-dogmatic style and generous presentation of various positions. This edition offers more feminist as well as multicultural ethical perspectives. Initial chapters discuss general concerns about meta-ethics before presenting major moral theories. Later chapters address special topics in personal and religious ethics as well as the most recent developments in moral theory. A helpful appendix teaches how to write ethics papers, while study questions for each chapter and useful bibliographies further assist you in review and additional exploration of topics. A companion website offers additional support with essay questions and numerous interactive learning aids.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It introduces theoretical concepts in an intriguing way, and it condenses a great deal of material in an accessible form." -- Michael Gavin, Eastern Michigan University

"I have used the text for several semesters and find it quite good for my students." -- Delores Doench, Southwestern Community College

"ETHICS: DISCOVERING RIGHT AND WRONG is an outstanding introductory ethics text, written with a keen eye to the abilities of upper-level undergraduate students. The authors do a nice job of clarifying abstract philosophical concepts in a way that demonstrates their relevance in the real world." -- Vic McCracken, Abilene Christian University

"I am impressed with the readability of the text, in terms of both reading level and clarity. It is hard enough to explain philosophy, but they do so with simple language and many concrete examples. This would be an easier text for my students to read while still offering them solid content." -- Mary Beth O'Halloran, Century College

"This is an excellent text that covers the broad range of issues in normative and metaethics quite well, but still being introductory enough for an intro course. For an advanced undergraduate course, it would pair nicely with source readings." -- Eric Rovie, Agnes Scott College --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethics just got more interesting., September 7, 2009

Professors, listen up: Several things determine whether a textbook will be well used. It needs to be a.) engaging, b.) well written, and c.) easy to handle. This textbook hits the mark in all areas. The writing is for the most part concise with good examples and the material is arranged in an easy to follow and interesting manner. Last but not least, the small form factor of the book makes it easily portable and easy to handle. Seriously, for us older students who are holding jobs, families, have commutes or waits at gymnastics with the kids, small form factor is the key. If I'm on my way out the door, THIS is the book I grab to do extra studying because it fits in my handbag. If I'm getting a spare minute in the bath, this book can be read there. None of my other texts fit in my bag or go to the bath.

So, it's an excellent text and it works really well with the busy student lifestyle. I'd recommend it.

I'm using it for an ethics class this fall, so I've only briefly skimmed it. Looks good, though.
