Book Description

0534496725 978-0534496722 October 12, 2004 7
Miller's SUSTAINING THE EARTH, 7th Edition, part of the new ADVANTAGE SERIES, is the briefest and most up-to-date environmental science text on the market. It has the most balanced approach to the environmental science instruction, with bias-free comparative diagrams throughout and a focus on prevention of and solutions to environmental problems. Tyler Miller is the most successful author in academic writing on environmental science because of his attention to currency, trend setting presentation of content, ability to predict student and instructor needs for new and different supplements, and his ability to retain the hallmarks on which instructors have come to depend. The content in the 7th edition of SUSTAINING THE EARTH is everything you have come to expect and more. In this 7th edition, the author has added the "How Would You Vote?" feature, which is an application of environmental science-related topics in the news. Students apply their environmental science knowledge from the book to a Web activity, which helps them investigate environmental science issues in a structured manner. They then cast their votes on the Web. Results are then tallied. Also found at the Miller website is the much used "Updates on Line." Updated twice a year with articles from InfoTrac College Edition service, CNN Today Video Clips, and Web links, instructors can seamlessly incorporate the most current news articles and research findings to support text presentations. This is a time saver for instructors and part-time teachers who can quickly determine what ancillary materials they want to utilize in just minutes. As with the last edition, this text is packaged with a free Student CD-ROM entitled "Interactive Concepts in Environmental Science." Organized by chapter, the CD gives students links to relevant resources, narrated animations, interactive figures, and prompts to review material and test themselves.

About the Author

G. Tyler Miller, Jr., has written 58 textbooks for introductory courses in environmental science, basic ecology, energy, and environmental chemistry. They include ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT, SUSTAINING THE EARTH, and ESSENTIALS OF ECOLOGY. Since 1975, MillerÂ's books have been the most widely used textbooks for environmental science in the United States and throughout the world. They have been used by almost 3 million students and have been translated into eight languages. Miller has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and has received two honorary doctorate degrees for his contributions to environmental education. He taught college for 20 years and developed an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate science program before deciding to write environmental science textbooks full time since 1975. Currently, he is the President of Earth Education and Research, devoted to improving environmental education. He describes his hopes for the future as follows: "If I had to pick a time to be alive, it would be the next 75 years. Why? First, there is overwhelming scientific evidence that we are in the process of seriously degrading our own life support system. In other words, we are living unsustainably. Second, within your [studentsÂ'] lifetime we have the opportunity to learn how to live more sustainably by working with the rest of nature, as described in this book." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and thoughtful, May 1, 2007

(REAL NAME)
I am a college student taking an Enviromental Science class that uses this text book. All the things you will need or want to know about the Earth's sustainable enviroment and how it shapes our lives is not enough to learn in one semester or quarter, but the author G. Tyler Miller JR. does a great job of condensing a LOT of important information into this text.

One of the great things is that the author invites the students who read his text to send him comments or ask him questions. Miller openly admits in the text that he thinks enviromental science is the most important thing you will learn in your lifetime. It dictates your health; the kind of water you drink and how your food is grown and what is in the air you are breathing right this moment. From how hazardous waste, soil management all the way to the path of sustainability this book has pretty much everything you want to know about the enviromental sciences (albiet condensed). It's even printed on recycled paper.

1.0 out of 5 stars sustaining the earth, January 29, 2012
I didn't buy this book or read it. Reason is, from reviewing the index, this book totally ignores the fact that smart meter technology is harmful to living cells. In recent years industries using wireless technology have been churning out flawed studies claiming RF, EMfs are harmless. In addition, engineers are not qualified to judge cell phones or smart meters as safe. Meanwhile studies show beyond a shadow of a doubt that cellular ion channels are altered by cell phone type technology. And that probably DNA replication and protein synthesis is altered by wireless technology.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too cheap to use color?, October 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered this book because it was the required text for my Environmental Science class. The book arrived faster than promised and was in great shape. The writing and content of the text seems appropriate for the class level but unfortunately all the graphs and pictures are in gray scale. When trying to decipher worldwide data from maps it is difficult to determine which shade of gray actually applies. The lack of color in an educational text truly creates the appearance of a half-hearted effort by the publisher. I would have happily paid a few dollars more to be able to use all the information contained within the book.
