Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This study of contemporary elementary social studies texts and basal readers and high school American history textbooks concludes that religion, traditional family values, and conservative political and economic views have been systematically eliminated from public school textbooks. Vitz (Psychology, New York Univ.) blames a "widespread secular and liberal mindset" within the educational establishment. Vitz cites texts that do not feature women as homemakers, lack patriotic spirit, do not promote free enterprise, and ignore movements such as tax revolt. He recommends tax support for private schools, to help equalize resources. While this conservative tract may interest general readers as well as educators, the classic analysis of school textbooks remains Frances FitzGerald's America Revised ( LJ 9/1/79), a more balanced, better written book.
