Census records for the early period of Cuban colonization are very difficult to find. This book compiles many of these resident lists from various sources such as the Archivo Geneal de Indias in Sevilla, Spain. It contains census, military, and other types of lists along with lists of landowners, sugar plantation owners and more.

About the Author
Peter E. Carr is a native of Cuba with over 30 years experience in the fields of historical and genealogical research worldwide. He is the editor of the Caribbean Historical & Genealogical Journal since 1993. He has lectured on genealogical research methods and sources throughout the United States. He holds membership in various academic and general organizations recently being named as the Ethnic Liaison of the California Genealogical Alliance.

I actually found the name of an ancestor.,

I have used this book one of many sources for genealogical research. Although I already new the name of the ancestor, the book confirmed his existence. I enjoyed the fact that the book not only named names, but added occupations when known. This made these people more alive to me. I do wish that it could have named more of my ancestors and been more specific of the one that I did find. It seemed that the book tended to focus more on the settlements of the coast and not enough information on those on the interior of the island.
