The Centellino is one of the best wine aerators we've found and delivers fantastic taste without the wait in traditional decanters. We were given one as a wedding gift and have run several taste tests against a variety of other aerators. In our first test, we had 2 identical bottled of wine, one which we opened 30 min ahead of time and put in a decanter, the other freshly opened. We poured 3 glasses, 1 from the freshly opened bottle, 1 from the 30 min bottle, and 1 aerated via the Centellino from the freshly opened bottle. The Centellino glass won the taste test, delivering the most balanced, richest flavors from the wine.
We have since run taste tests with 2 other decanters, one which was plastic which involved pouring the wine through a series of screens and had holes on the side to aerate the wine - that aerator had several disadvantages. First, it made an obnoxious whistling noise while pouring, second you had to pour the wine into tiny hole on the top of the aerator, and third, it did not deliver an equal flavor to the Centillino. Not to mention the problematically aesthetic fact that we were pouring our wine through metal screens in a plastic aerator. The second aerator we tried was a glass funnel with an air tube on the side - while this was easier to pour than the plastic aerator, it still involved pouring the wine into a funnel, not overflowing it and creating the potential for mess. It was a good experience aesthetically but still did not deliver the flavor of the Centillino.
My only issue with the Centellino is that the wood around the base isn't sealed very well and it has cracked over time - make sure to completely dry yours each time you wash it if you get one. Also, it suggests that it also offers a way to seal you bottle, but it is little more than a cork and doesn't offer the same preservation value of suction devices.
I would highly recommend this aerator to anyone wanting a fantastic pour of delicious full flavored wine.
