Don't Give Up,
By
This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Hardcover)
Not all of us are born to wealth or luxury and that is certainly the case of Lindsay and Kerrie Ann. When the children's mom is sent to jail for selling drugs the neighbor Miss Honi Love who is like a mom to them tries to get custody of them but they are sent to live in different foster homes.
Lindsay was lucky and got to be placed in a wonderful, loving and caring family who adopted her as there own daughter while Kerrie Ann was sent from foster home to foster home and her life was going downhill. Now we move to thirty years later and we get to see how Lindsay has made a life for herself. She owns a bookstore and has Miss Honi living and working with her . Kerrie Ann on the other hand is in more trouble then she can handle she married, left him and after not protecting her daughter Bella she is taken away from her. Kerrie Ann has one thought only and that is the promise she made to herself to get Bella back at what ever the cost. Now imagine showing up at your sisters book store with a style of dress, tight and revealing outfit and not to mention the pink in her hair to introduce herself to her sister and ask for her help. The reunion is difficult at first but Kerrie Ann is determined to do whatever it takes to win Bella back. With the support of Ollie, Lindsay and Miss Honi they all go thru some difficult times together but the love and support is there and not just for Kerrie Ann as they help Lindsay with problems she encounters about the property that was left to her by her parents the home she adores and does not want to leave. It is very touching to see how different worlds come together join forces and each help the other sister and it is a very wonderful book which shows that family is there for you although sometimes it is not easy to except help from others but this story shows when everyone is willing to change there is such a thing as a happy ending.

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON YOU CAN FIND SECOND CHANCES....,
By
This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Hardcover)
From early childhood, Lindsay understood responsibility. When her mother Crystal chose stripping and drugs above caring for her two daughters, the nurturing fell to Lindsay. Watching over Kerrie Ann became her role in life. But when Crystal was arrested, nothing could keep Lindsay and Kerrie Ann together. Placed in separate foster homes, they lost track of one another for many years.
By the time Kerrie Ann inadvertently discovered that she had an older sister--a fact she hadn't remembered because she'd been three years old at the time of their separation--she was in desperate straits. If anyone needed a big sister, it was Kerrie Ann. Somehow, she had made many of the same mistakes as her own mother, with drug use and bad choices; her daughter Bella ended up in the foster care system. In their years apart, Lindsay had lucked out and was adopted by a loving family. When her adoptive parents died, they left her the beautiful coastal home she loved. Now a bookstore owner in the small town of Blue Moon Bay, Lindsay has just about everything she ever wanted. But a major developer is trying to crush her so that he can build his resort. When the two sisters finally reconnect, they both have more than enough trouble to overcome. Will Kerrie Ann reconnect with the sister she doesn't remember, or will their differences drive a greater wedge between them? How will Kerrie Ann begin to change her life so that she can get her daughter back? And what will a handsome stranger who inadvertently enters Lindsay's life bring to the table? More trouble? Or the possible solution to at least one of her problems. From the opening pages until the very end, I was compelled to keep reading. The story and the characters felt so familiar to me, especially since I had spent years working with dysfunctional families. Finding the fragile connections between family members and working to strengthen them were my goals, so I could totally relate to the struggles and drama in this story. Once in a Blue Moon is a tale of a family, but it is more than that. It is the ultimate testament to the strength of family bonds, no matter how many obstacles crop up along the way; it is also a reminder of how easily these bonds can be severed and that the task of maintaining them is the most important one in life. A definite five star read for me.

Once In a Blue Moon,
By
This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Hardcover)
My feelings toward this book were a lot better at the beginning than at the end. As the book went on, the characters began to wear on me - I found them to be annoying and entitled, Miss Honi Love being the exception. The ending dragged on for too many pages, and "shockingly," it ended picture perfect for the characters. A little more true-to-life grit would do this book some good.

This book is my first read from Eileen Goudge. This book has a plot that captures your attention and keeps it! I found it hard to put this book down, I wanted to know more, what was was going to come next? I found myself quite wrapped up in the storyline, hoping for the sisters to cooperate with one another, hoping for each sister to find love and success, praying that they would become a happy family and, of course, live happily ever after. My only issue, though tit wasn't even really an issue, was that the author is very descriptive, sometimes too descriptive. A couple of instances I was reading the lengthy descriptions of the surroundings and the characters and forgot what was going on in the plot. That aside, this book is still a great read, the great detail helps the reader visualize the gorgeous ocean side city of Blue Moon Bay!

Couldn't get into it.,

This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Hardcover)
The storyline is good, but the author dragged on with descriptions and I felt like it took forever to get where she was going with it. I found that very annoying. References to people and situations in real life; someone is more Sam Shepard than George Clooney left me scratching my head and off to do a Google search. Describing Bella's eyes being like her father's and continuing on to describe them as Amber and Tiger like only to say a few pages later she was looking up with huge dark eyes spoiled my imagery.
Overall I just found I couldn't get sucked in. It's like a movie where your waiting for it to get good and you wait and your looking at your watch thinking any moment now.... It dragged on.

A Bit Wordy,
By
This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Hardcover)
The premise is good, and the story is well written. But it is as if the author had a word count to fulfill. I did a lot of skipping paragraphs and at some points pages, and I don't feel as if I missed anything relevant to the story.
This is a great story of two sisters brought together after many years apart growing up. It is a testament of nurture vs nature, and shows both sides of blood being thicker than water (but not always).

Review of Once in a Blue Mooon by Eileen Goudge,
This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Hardcover)
I was given the opportunity to read this book by the One2One Network. Once in a Blue Moon a book about two sisters and the way their worlds collide. It captures you from the start as you watch the girls torn apart from each other and put into foster care. Lindsey ends up in a loving home where Kerri Ann becomes very much her mother's mirror. While the main plot deals with the sisters when the meet for the first time thirty years later with Kerri Ann asking for help, the romances that are woven within it are just as enjoyable.
I read this book in a day. I was drawn in and just couldn't put it down. By the time it was finished I was wanting to know more about the characters about their lives, I didn't want the story to end. This was the first book I read by Eileen Goudge and I cannot wait to pick up more.

Good story about sisters separated as children into different foster homes, reuniting and continuing along life paths that crisscross and clash and in the end find peace. Set in beautiful California coast and run by older sister Lindsay, the book store in Blue Moon Bay is the place where people like to gather. When Kerri Ann walks through the doors one afternoon hoping to find her long lost sister she finds even more than she dreamed. Lindsay is forever changed by this sister -- sibling -- stranger who challenges her stable secure world. Kerri Ann is shocked to find Miss Honi, the ex stripper, aka exoctic dancer who took the girls under her protective wing long ago when they were children left alone much too often by their neglectful drug addicted mother, is Lindsay's housemate and store clerk. Miss Honi is beside herself with joy as the only children she calls hers are together again. Romance walks in and around their world along with trouble as the story develops into a struggle over Lindsay's inheritance and the city's eminent domain land rights, Kerri's child custody conflict and the men who are all wrong and so right for these sisters.
Eileen Goudge doesn't disappoint.

This review is from: Once in a Blue Moon (Mass Market Paperback)
Once in a Blue Moon is about two sisters who were put in different foster homes at a young age. One went to a very nice couple who lived on in Blue Moon Bay (which by it's location and description is obviously Half Moon Bay on the California coast, south of San Francisco). She was eventually adopted. The other, was bounced from one foster home to the next and finally ran away at the age of 16. As adults, they were like night and day.
I had a difficult time with the first section of the book about their childhood. I believe that had more to do with my personal baggage than with the book itself. I set it down once and read another book, but my curiosity as to what happened to this yin/yang sister relationship drew me back. When the book jumped 25+ years later, the story became more interesting. I had to find out what happened to them. Each sister had their own life altering dragon to slay, not to mention their relationship to reconcile. Plus,I came to be enthralled with the minor characters, because of their quirkiness and because of their great love. Sit in a comfy chair with a glass of wine and read this book. You'll be glad you did! |
