4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Readible and Engaging - Wanted more
This little book is a highly readable and engaging literary adaptation of the TNT/Spielberg epic film. I found the book extremely absorbing, providing adequate additional background and exposition on the characters and events in the 1840s-1890s westward expansion saga. 3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Enough
This book is a quick and easy read (although there are sloughs of characters if you're not familiar with the mini-series). It gives good coverage of American History, though it may not be entirely accurate. It's close enough to help with your basic understanding, and perhaps think about American History from a more balanced point of view. As has already been mentioned,...

This little book is a highly readable and engaging literary adaptation of the TNT/Spielberg epic film. I found the book extremely absorbing, providing adequate additional background and exposition on the characters and events in the 1840s-1890s westward expansion saga. The book (like the film) bounces back and forth between Lakota and white settler perspectives - I guess I was somewhat disappointed as this could have been written in more epic novel or novel series format (the story and characters "scream" for a John Jakes type treatment a la "North and South").

The Lakota portion of the story - centering on a medicine man named Loved by the Buffalo is esp. engaging. In the film, Lakota historian and story-teller Joseph Marshall provides a wonderful a wonderful narrative - the book captures this Lakota oral tradition in story telling perfectly (at least for the Native American portion).

5.0 out of 5 stars Into the West, October 12, 2005
This review is from: Into the West (Paperback)
This was a wonderful miniseries, so I was very excited to read the book. The book was GREAT! It followed very closely with the movie and gave more insight into the characters and story line. An easy and enjoyable read!

5.0 out of 5 stars into the west, October 31, 2011

The book arrived in great condition, and was here sooner than anticipated. The large print makes it easy to read and as usual, the book is better than the movie/mini-series, even though that was excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!!, September 15, 2011

I absolutely LOVE this book! I own the DVD set of the TV series and I absolutely love it. I was so excited when I saw there was a book that the show was based on. I love it because the stories are pretty much the same as the TV version, yet there are differences that make it intriguing to read. Also, if you're an avid fan like me, it helps you to understand more of the history and events behind the story. I just love it so much! I definitely recommend this book, and the TV series to anyone who loves a great story. It has everything: drama, romance, history, action, etc. It's just a great read and a great story. Please read it!! You will love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, The Mini-Series Is Just As Good, June 26, 2011

I received this book very promptly from the seller, and I would buy from the seller again any time.

I liked the mini-series so much, I decided to read the book. Sometimes a book gives much more detail than a movie will, but this one didn't. I do like the fact that I have much of the wisdom taken from American Indians in hard copy. The book and the movie are just the same, and each has it's own strengths. The book provides a writen record of all that is said and done in the story. The movie is very compelling with much beautiful scenery and great actors to portray the people in the book. Also, the movie adds great drama to the story. I'm glad that I have the book, and I'm also glad that I rented the mini-series from Netflix.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the series; the book..not so much., December 1, 2005

This review is from: Into the West (Paperback)
I enjoyed the series, but the edition of the book I have is full of spelling errors and even some major historical ones. On page 177, for instance, it states "Kansas was part of the territory ceded by Mexico a decade and a half earlier, and as the territory slipped closer to statehood, the delicate balance of power between free and slave states began to tip." Kansas was part of the Lousiana Purchase in 1803 and was not ceded by Mexico. Sloppy research, sloppy proof reading, but a thrilling read anyway. It will probably be a better experience if you also watch the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Into The West, July 14, 2007
This review is from: Into the West (Paperback)
I have seen the mini-series and have the book on order at the local library. I am hoping that the book ties up some of the loose ends that were in the series. For instance, what happens to Abraham High Wolf after his work on the railroad is completed? Does he have any further contact with his parents? What happens to cousin Naomi after her & Chief Prarie Fire's child is born? Do they perish in one of the many slaughters of the indians?
