5.0 out of 5 stars A PRECIOUS JEWEL FROM HELEN REDDY

1.0 out of 5 stars Go back to the songs you used to sing in the 70's.
None of the songs click except knowing when to leave. This record is terrible.

Fans of Ms. Reddy have always apprecated her ability to choose songs with deeply felt lyrics, and this album fits right in with her best. Her crystal clear voice sounds as beautful as ever. This album, along with her Essential Collection, gets much play in my home. If you are a fan, you won't be disappointed. "Fifty Percent", "Tell Me It's Not True", and "Love Look Away" are worth the price of the CD all by themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helen Redddy--A triumphant return to the recording studio!, September 29, 1998
By
This review is from: Center Stage (Audio CD)
It is a shame that it took Helen Redddy 15 years to return to the recording studio. But the wait was well worth it!!! The highlight of this new CD is definitely Helen's version of "Tell Me It's Not True" from the Broadway show "Blood Brothers". Her vocals are strong and full of emotion. Having seen "Blood Brothers" with Petula Clark, Helen's more stylized version brought tears to my eyes. Other songs which highlight the album include "Surrender" from "Sunset Boulevard" (Helen is backed up by a gospel choir); "Your Just in Love" from "Call Me Madam", and "Fifty Percent" from "Ballroom".

After listening to the 14 songs on this outstanding CD, I think Helen will be returning to Broadway or the West End in the very near future!! This 57 year old song stylist has not lost a bit of power and strength in her voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A SUPRISE! Reddy not ready to "surrender", February 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Center Stage (Audio CD)
What a pleasant surprise it was to see a "NEW" Reddy release, the first in 15 years. Although being somewhat skeptical about the 'broadway, show tune' music that was being covered I was blown away by the crystal clarity of her voice and the elegant production of this recording. Instead of opting for the usual over the top broadway tunes, Reddy instead chose the material very wisely. You will find no versions of "Memory", "Somewhere" or "Don't cry for me Argentina". Instead you will find little hidden away gems that are not as familiar, allowing you to listen to them for what seems the first time. She also makes each song on this recording her own. Standout cuts include: "Tell me it's not true", "My Friend", "50 Percent", "Surrender" and the wonderful Duet of "You're Just In Love". Take a chance and listen to a truly elegant recording. I'm glad I did. Now if only her and Burt Bacharach could do an album like he and Elvis Costello did. That would be amazing!

Excellent return to the studio from one of the 70's best female vocalists. It has been way too long for this great artist not to record. If you were ever a Helen Reddy fan, this is a must for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's wonderful to have you back, Helen!, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Center Stage (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful CD filled with lesser-known show tunes sung by a certifiable pop legend, Helen Reddy. Her rich, articulte and unmistakably distinct voice, with that legendary perfect-pitch, is well-suited to these songs, and the orchestrations are first class. Helen Reddy dropped out of the music scene in the 80's and has been deeply missed by her legions of fans. This CD is a most welcome comeback that will bring endless pleasure and joy to lovers of Helen's voice and of broadway music. Bravo Helen. You've still got

5.0 out of 5 stars What a voice!!!, December 1, 2004
This review is from: Center Stage (Audio CD)
I just got this brilliant CD yesterday and let me just say this is a brilliant CD.

Helen's voice sounds much better today then it did back in the 70's normally its the other way around!!!!

Listening to her version of Knowing When To Leave, My Friend, The Writing Is On The Wall, & her heart felt rendition of "A Boy Like You" is just lovely you can tell that song is a personal message to her own son and her rendition of "Tell Me Its Not True" is just pure heaven. & Surrender I had already owned the remixed dance version by Helen of this song which I love but this CD version is intense as its a ballad and more heartfelt.

Where as the Dance mix is 100% a dance Anthem just waiting to happen :o)

If you love musicals as I do then this CD is 100% for you.

Its just a pity that she is no longer performing in concert I swear I always thought she would be the new crop of Divas that would be performing to sold out performances in Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe.

just like former divas such as Lola Folana or okay I can't think of anyone else but you get the idea :o)

4.0 out of 5 stars a real recording star, December 9, 1998
By A Customer

Helen's voice is a great instrument. I had forgotten that she must have had something special about her voice to have had so many fans and radio hits in the seventies. The song selection is inspired and it sounds like a lot of money and talent was put into this album. There's a warmth and simplicity and intimacy that you don't get with the usual Broadway or cabaret singer who puts out an album. I'm a fan of the Betty Buckleys and Mary Cleere Harans but Helen Reddy has something extra in the recording studio, not to say anything about who's a better singer than whom overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars A triumph from a world-class entertainer, October 8, 1998
By

Helen Reddy is back with a vengence. Though thrilling audiences on Broadway, in London's West End and everywhere in between for the last several years, this is the first recorded offering from this excellent singer in over 15 years. Good things certainly come to those who wait. "Tell Me it's Not True" always brings the house to it's feet, no matter where Helen performs it and makes this CD well worth the price. The other show-stoppers get the Reddy treatment, bringing emotion and conviction to every song. Don't miss this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars It makes you want to get on your feet and shout BRAVO!!, April 14, 1999

This is truely a match of a great voice and a collection of wonderful songs. Experiencing "Tell Me Its Not True" sung by Helen Reddy's distinct voice is a pleasure that can't be described adequately. "Blow Gabriel Blow" is light-hearted and fun. You can feel the emotions of determination and love in "Fifty Percent" and "My Friend" is a beautiful duet that I love to play over and over. BRAVO Helen and I can't wait for the Encore!
