Save Maisy, Save the Future

In Centipede: Infestation players take on the role of Max, the hero and bug slayer, who must defend Maisy, a girl whose gardens bring life back to the wasteland. Squash giant mutated centipedes, spiders, beetles, grubs, caterpillars, moths, and more. Lay waste to these mutated bugs with weapons such as machine guns, flame throwers, acid guns, rockets, and missiles among others as you use bodies of the dead bugs as defenses and power-ups like turret guns and barricades, or just crush them with your mighty stomp.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Biggest Surprise of The Year December 30, 2011
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I've had low hopes for Atari games lately. Say what you will, but there's no denying that the formerly awesome company has fallen from grace in recent years. This the company that pioneered the first generation of console gaming and formerly held the rights to excellent series like "Driver", after all. But with it's stocks in the toilet and barely any relevancy outside of it's retro games in this new generation, Atari needed to rebrand itself. At first, doing a modern reboot of the arcade classic "Centipede" seemed like the worst way to go about that. But as a discount title at Target, and because it wasn't on my buck, I took a chance. What ensued was regret that I underestimated this solid, fun title.

"Centipede Infestation" is a total blast, filled with a decent playtime chock-full of retro arcade action. It takes the classic formula of the game and turns in on it's head, setting the carnage to thumping techno and an entertaining story, albeit a very simple one. The protagonist is Max, whose self-bestowed moniker is "Max The Bug Slayer." He's one of the last lines of defense against giant bugs that have wiped out humanity in a giant war, rendering the Earth a desolate wasteland. Upon encountering a lone girl named Maisy in a garden somewhat akin to an oasis, he swears to protect her against the hoard of disgusting insects that ravage the planet.

Sure, it's a story that's been done before, but it's not as if "Centipede" was ever about groundbreaking narrative. The primary focus has always been action, and it's this that "Infestation" delivers in spades. It's rare that a game touting itself as "arcade-style" genuinely feels as such, but thanks to the loving work put into the game by WayForward, there ends up being no other way to describe it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is great fun but much harder than original game February 26, 2013
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The reason I said harder is because instead of being a bystander just pressing buttons and moving levers, you are in the midst of them and they can be vicious. Advancing to more paowerful weapons helps when they get harder to destroy. I am so pleased that the arcade games that all of us oldies enjoyed as kids and the next youngest enjoyed as video games. The 3DS is a terrific platform for the arcade games to be available on. There are other arcade games that I hope come to the 3DS, one being Marble Madness. It was my absolute favporite arcade game as it was frustrating but lots of fun at the same time. Nintendo brings in games from various manufacurers. I would like them to bring in a few TI games that were for the TI99A such as Parsic and Tunnels of Doom. Those we had back in the 70s. Tunnels of Doom was difficult to get started because the game had to be loaded in by a tape player that squeeled and squaked as the data went into the ocmputer. I am sure a 3DS version would be much simpler to operate. There were many other home arcade game systems that came out even before and then after the TI. Those games would be fun to. So I hope Nintendo expends it's securing of other company's games which may very well be out of copyright limitations now. What ever, there are a lot of possibilities for more and more gaming to come out for the 3DS. I recommend you purchase Centipede if you enjoyed it in other forms.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little redundant March 1, 2013

I bought two copies so my husband and I could play together. We love multiplayer games. This one got a little redundant after a few levels. We haven't played it much since.
