After a few uses, I tried to transfer data to/from this drive and I kept getting an error that it was write protected.

I will change my review if the company's support comes through with a solution to my problem but, until then, I just lost my money on this product. While transferring over data from a clunky external hard drive, some nice family member closed my laptop (to save electricity, I suppose). Turns out, this is a death-blow for the Centon DataStick. It is now completely write protected. This must happen often because there are several online forums on how to fix this problem. Trouble is...none have worked. I've even downloaded two other programs that are supposed to fix this problem but they can't. Why? Because the disk is write-protected.

Remember when you could write-protect a disk by clicking that little plastic thing? Was that such a bad system?

I hoped this would be a rugged flash drive, but it failed after a few months. I can't write more than 3 gigs now without getting CRC write errors--even after reformatting. I don't know about waterproof, but it's definitely not 4-months-of-time proof. Go with a better brand.

April 2nd, 2009:

Bought this from another seller, not Amazon.

For several reasons, I thought that this was the best of it's type (rubber-armored USB flash drives) I'd seen, and I've owned several from different makers.. and the physical package is the best I've had.

I was enthusiastic for almost 3 weeks but not much use, wrote to it maybe 6 times, including the initial migration from my last thumb drive... then it suddenly, no warning, locked up my system in the middle of a write. No amount of chkdsk, fdsk, reformatting or re-partitioning would bring it back. All attempts fail or hang, and each format attempt says that "track 0" cannot be written to at the END of a reformat, after it reaches "100%".

I've got an RMA for it, it MIGHT get replaced, though the policies are very difficult to follow... but will I ever really be able to trust another one of these? I've had at least 10 USB flash drives of various types, and this is the first to just die on me.

Very disappointed.

Please note that, as of this writing, the one review of the "32gb" version is actually (according to the review itself) about this, the 16gb version, and that reviewer apparently got one that never worked at all.

What good is a tough, waterproof package if the electronics inside just die?

June 3rd, 2009:

RMA'd the first one, I've been using the replacement for maybe 6 weeks now (with careful backups), I even ran it through the EXACT circumstances under which the first failed, no problems.

I still like the physical package better than any other that I've tried to wear. Unlike all the others, it's silicone rubber, the cap seals to a ridged lip on the drive rather than just the connector, and, so far the cap hasn't loosened.

Got a great price, but a lousy bargain. Bought this about 3 months ago on sale. Sounded great.

Pros:
Cheap Price

Cons:
Slowest write speed imaginable
Claimed write speed was (3.3MB/second) - seemed to work at 1/4 that abysmal speed
First full backup took over 24 hours.
Drive crashed and had to be reformatted every two weeks.

Gave up after the fourth reformat. Actually I had no choice because it
wouldn't reformat. This is really poor performance from a device that was poorly made.

If you go for super cheap, sometimes you get a bargain, and other times
you just get cheap junk. IMO, this falls into the latter.

My 32GB backs 1/2 the data in about 1/10 the time and it doesn't have
to be continually reformatted. One of my corsair's failed, but many others
have been fine going on several months of intense use.

The centron never had intense use, just 2-3x a week backup of changed
files. Even that seemed beyond its capabilities.

I will destroy this to prevent any data on it from possibly being recovered.
If it were just photos, I wouldn't care. But, there are personal and financial
files on it.

I intend to avoid centon like the plague.

I purchased this DataStick in mid-May from an Amazon-owned distributing company, and finally got around to unpacking it last night. After I copied ALL of my proprietary and personal information onto the DataStick, and then tried to delete a file, I got the well-publicized Centon "Write Protected Error". This means that nothing can be removed (deleted) from this data stick, nor can I rename or modify any files which have been copied to the DataStick - although everything I copied to it (my entire My Docs) is readable by anyone with a computer. (And no, I did_not_forget to use the 'Safely Remove Software' function before removing it from the Flash Drive.)

I can't return it for a refund because it contains all of my business tax returns, my entire Outlook Inbox and Outbox, all my business documents and client records, etc. And no, I cannot (re)format it - the write-protect status won't allow it. Various formatting programs for Windows 7 have been unsuccessful in reformatting it, and even the Acronis File Shredder could not touch it.

You can google for 'Centon DataStick Write Protection Error' to see that I am not alone in this experience with this product. On the Centon website, their Tech Support offers a couple of suggested work-arounds to resolve this problem, both of which I tried repeatedly to no avail. These approaches involved manipulating my Control Panel's Computer Management drive settings and rebooting my system numerous times - a total waste of another hour.

I bought one of these DataSticks last year and it was fully functional. But not this one - as has been the case with countless others who have resorted to seeking help from Tech Blogs without success. Apparently, many are defective.
