Editorial Reviews

"Are your heroes flat, lusterless characters with no sense of history or depth of personality? With Central Casting: Heroes of Legend, characters take on lives of their own. They gain families, friends, enemies, personalities, detailed past histories, and most importantly - gain motivations for life and adventuring! Central Casting is a detailed, stand-alone system of tables, charts, and roleplay guidelines for creating thoroughly individualized, involved and invigorating backgrounds for both player characters and non-player characters."

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Jody on July 27, 2011
Format: Paperback
I have both the 1st and 2nd editions of Heroes of Legend. I give each edition 5 out of 5 stars because each is a great resource for building characters including backgrounds, occupations, hobbies, traits, contacts & acquaintances and more. Either edition can be used as a system with dice to generate a complete character (other than stats which will be determined by the RPG system you use), or the tables can be scanned for ideas. The book (either edition, though the 2nd edition includes more material) is so good that I hope for the sake of others it someday goes back into print or is made available in electronic format.

This review is primarily a comparison of the 2nd edition of Central Casting: Heroes of Legend published in 1995 vs. the 1st edition published in 1988. Before I had both editions, I was curious about how much material the two share since Amazon lists each edition with a different author. As noted below, much of the information from the 1st edition is included in the revised and expanded 2nd edition, and the author of the 1st edition is given credit at the beginning of 2nd edition.

The following are general comparisons; later I will edit this review to add more specific comparisons.

1st edition:
- Author, cover artist and illustrator: Paul Jaquays
- 96 pages plus table of contents on inside of front cover and blank character sheet on inside of back cover

2nd edition:
- Authors: Robert Sassone credited with material new to the 2nd edition, plus fiction and layout. Paul Jaquays credited with material from the 1st edition that is included in the 2nd edition. According to the introduction to 2nd edition, the new edition contains ``new, revised and expanded material``.

I was saddened to see that there has been confusion associated with authorship of material in this book. Jennell Jaquays has it right when she points out that Paul was sole author of the character creation system in both editions. I redid the layout and added the new fictional material that Jennell refers to as "color material".

Clarification for historical purposes: The second edition of Heroes of Legend brings a number of the refinements created for the science fiction and modern character books to bear upon the fantasy topic. Robert Sassone is, more correctly, the editor of Central Casting: Heroes of Legend 2nd Edition. He created the new, looser layout style, added the "color material" that replaced most of the art in the second edition. Jaquays was employed by TSR as an artist at the time and could not significantly participate in revisions to the book. History should record that the character creation content is ALL Jaquays's work, and not Sassone's.

I ordered a copy for a friend who is a serious tabletop gamer; he already had an old copy but had mentioned he was looking for a replacement. I cannot stress enough how awesome this book is- it is the most detailed character background/personality generator you will find. There are pdf versions of this online that you can torrent from various sites, but using the charts and tables in such a manner is a hassle. Nothing beats having this type of source in book format at your fingertips.

If this wasn't such a rare book and so expensive, I would order another for myself.

A good book on character personality and character history development. Useful if used with good judgement. It was pretty good
