Book Description

December 1999
Central Europe is a paradox. On the one hand it is the heart of Europe, a region still full of the literature, classical music and high culture of the 19th-century; and on the other it is a remnant of the Soviet Empire, economically devastated and socially crippled by decades of Communist Party rule.

Leading historians, specialists in art and literature, economists and political scientists from East and West present a stock-taking ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the bad old days. This multi-faceted picture of a complicated region at the turn of the century is explained by Russian and German commentators with a view from Moscow and Bonn. From contemporary security issues to the prospects for European Union expansion to the deep cultural and historical roots of the countries of the region, this volume of essays will improve your knowledge and understanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Firmly at the Core, January 2, 2001

This review is from: Central Europe: Core or Periphery (Hardcover)
Just as the contributing essayists in this collection prove that the Central European countries are indeed central to Europe's future, editor Christopher Lord proves that this book should be regarded as essential to anyone interested in the topic. Very few books on Central Europe have managed to avoid being dragged into the mire of pre-1989 political disputes. This book focuses on developments in Central Europe since the fall of Communism and asks a group of renowned specialists from all over the region to predict Central Europe's future. The result is a very pertinent work on a dynamic area that is arguably even more geo-politically vital now than it was back in the days when the U.S. and U.S.S.R. started a cold war over it.
