As I read further, though, it was evident the author had also done extensive research into the history, geology and demographics of the tri-county area in Central Oregon. At that point, I began to wonder why it had taken this long for someone to write such a contemporary overview of our rapidly growing region. -- Stephanie Swee, The Bulletin, Bend, Oregon, Scene, Friday, May 17, 1996, page 12
At first glance, this book might seem indistinguishable from any number of other similar volumes: a good many color photographs in a slick, large-format, coffee table book. Certainly worth having, but not exactly a standout. But take a second look. Central Oregon is a standout in nearly every respect.
To begin with, the photographs are masterful. The book has 91 of them, and everyone is effective. These are not calendar art -- they are fine examples of composition and style....Barnes hasn't written a typically lightweight travel volume. She has chosen instead to produce an informative work on the area designed for the average reader....This book is a treasure for the armchair traveler and for those who have no idea how different Central Oregon is from the Willamette Valley. Central Oregon: View from the Middle is a good deal more than a picture book or a pitch for tourism. It's an experience in and of itself. -- Dan Hays, The Statesman Journal, Sunday, September 22, 1996, C-1
