It would be a lie to write that I have been waiting a long time for the soundtrack release of Up In Central Park because I never thought that anyone had the original studio recordings. Also, this is, perhaps, Deanna Durbin's worst movie. (That is not to suggest that Miss Durbin's other films were bad as I find almost all of them delightful in one form or another.) But Up In Central Park, which should have at least been filmed in color, was poorly directed, had too few songs, and was...well...sophmoric. And, incredibly, one of the most beautiful songs by Sigmond Romberg and Dorothy Fields, "Close as Pages in a Book," was recorded by Deanna Durbin and Dick Haymes but not included in the film! Happily, the song is included in this soundtrack album which, as a whole, is a pure delight! The selections sound crisp and clean, and Deanna Durbin's voice is a delight throughout. Dick Haymes also sounds very good. In addition, there are selctions from the 78 rpm set of this same show featuring Jeanette MacDonald. Ironically, I had just purchased the MacDonald record set a few weeks before this CD was issued. Now I can listen to it in my car or while I am writing or painting. How wonderful is that? (We live in a truly remarkable time when we can enjoy these old recordings in their remastered states.) Another winner from Sepia Records. (And checkout the other Deanna Durbin CDs they have in their catalogue.)

This is the only time Deanna Durbin and Dick Haymes ever worked together. The film itself isn't bad,but it was no threat to The Sound Of Music or Oklamahoma.
The songs leave a lot to be desired, but if your a Deanna Durbin fan like me,its worth pickin up.
The quality of the CD isn't bad.
Its sort of a shame this film didn't do as good as it should have.
The song Close As Paes In A Book is the best in this lineup.
I would buy it.Deanna is,as she always was,at her best and she makes the most of a disappointing film.

This review is of the 1948 motion picture "Up in Central Park" as well as the fantastic new CD release from Sepia of the complete motion picture soundtrack recording. There are those who feel this is Deanna Durbin's worst film -- and boring. They're entitled to their opinion, of course. I want the world to know that, even in its final truncated, eviscerated form, I find it to be the most charming, fast-paced and completely habit-forming movie I've seen in a long while. It offers the eternally beautiful 27-year-old Deanna at her most spunky, cute and adorable best, matched every step of the way by handsome Dick Haymes, perhaps her best leading man, and the hysterically amusing Vincent Price. I never wanted it to end.

Indeed this 84-minute film could have and should have been about 30 minutes longer, and was planned to have been a truer reproduction of the original Broadway success. One can also only imagine what it might have achieved had it been filmed in Technicolor, or even sepia tone. That said, the black and white photography, in fact, requires no apology. It is stunning and evocative. The direction and performances are spot on and, despite unconscionable and highly questionable cuts by the executives at Universal at the time of the film's release, the pace is breathtaking. The dances and musical numbers staged by the Broadway production's Helen Tamiris are exciting, inspired and unique in their way as were those of her contemporaries Fosse and DeMille. They enable most of us who missed seeing it appreciate what the celebrated stage version must have been like.

"Something in the Wind" has long held its place as my personal favorite of Miss Durbin's films, with fond memories of having seen it eight times one week week long ago on Million Dollar Movie.
