4.0 out of 5 stars Swing bands that play with dancers in Mind, December 21, 1999
This review is from: Central Park Stompers (Audio CD)
There are three types of so called swing groups that play for dancers: recreationists, show biz-oriented units, and hot combos that explore good time music from the late 30's through the mind 50's. Singer Peggy Cone's Central Park Stompers fit into the latter caategory. Cone is a personable, swinging singer and colorful enough to stand out. Her joyful renditions of six selections, three swing era standards, plus Wynona Carr's Til the Well runs dry, Bobby Troups "Daddy" and an exuberant "Flip Flop and Fly" are all performed with a great deal of spirit. They make this sound like a top notch band cira 1944. Peggy Cone performs in the New York area, where one imagines she puts on a "Great Show."

Peggy cone sits at the top in my cd collection next to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Peggy's cd has songs with different tempos. You can do East Coast swing and West Coast swing together to a lot of them! Which makes everyone happy. I've seen Peggy live several times and there's little difference between hearing her live and hearing the cd. Definately good quality! It's a keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars I wanted more...Short but sweet and sooo Swingable, November 19, 1999

I saw this band, Peggy Cone and The Central Park Stompers in NYC last weekend. What a fun band to watch, dance to and listen too. I bought the Cd, and enjoyed all the six tunes. Especially liked Daddy, an old tune, that is hardly ever covered. Peggy, is a really excellent singer, and doesn't take herself too seriously. You can tell how much she loves to sing. I thought the band, and the arrangements were top notch. Loved the drum solo on This can't be love. A rather fast and high energy number for the more advanced lindy hopper. can't wait to see another one of there "High entertainmet" value shows again soon.

Loved the pink 1950's dress, she looked like a burst of cotton candy.

4.0 out of 5 stars My feet just couldn't stop dancing, November 17, 1999

I have enjoyed Peggy's band, The Central Park Stompers at Swing Dances in Philadelphia before. But at this private party I must say this was the best ever! Their live show was all Cool Swing that defied basic rhythm steps. During a really wonderfully long instrumental, the band played intricate, yet gentle solos that I could call only Conversational. I wish the "Swing Scene" was about deliciousness, (Like the Stompers) rather than pounding us with heavy beats.
