This book gives an unparalleled, up-to-date, in-depth treatment of all kinds of flow phenomena encountered in centrifugal pumps including the complex interactions of fluid flow with vibrations and wear of materials. The scope includes all aspects of hydraulic design, 3D-flow phenomena and partload operation, cavitation, numerical flow calculations, hydraulic forces, pressure pulsations, noise, pump vibrations (notably bearing housing vibration diagnostics and remedies), pipe vibrations, pump characteristics and pump operation, design of intake structures, the effects of highly viscous flows, pumping of gas-liquid mixtures, hydraulic transport of solids, fatigue damage to impellers or diffusers, material selection under the aspects of fatigue, corrosion, erosion-corrosion or hydro-abrasive wear, pump selection, and hydraulic quality criteria. The 2nd ed. has been enhanced by hydraulic design information on axial pumps and sewage pumps, turbine performance curve prediction, torsional rotor vibrations and recent research results on partload flow and hydraulic excitation forces. To ease the use of the information, the methods and procedures for the various calculations and failure diagnostics discussed in the text are gathered in about 150 pages of tables which may be considered as almost unique in the open literature. The text focuses on practical application in the industry and is free of mathematical or theoretical ballast. In order to find viable solutions in practice, the physical mechanisms involved should be thoroughly understood. The book is focused on fostering this understanding which will benefit the pump engineer in industry as well as academia and students.

About the Author

Dr.-Ing. Johann F. Gülich (1939), MS in Mechanical Engineering from the TU Hannover (Germany), PhD from the TU Darmstadt. Professional carreer: Project engineer in the nuclear power plant division of Siemens, Erlangen, Germany. Since 1966 with Sulzer Winterthur (Switzerland): Starting as development engineer in the nuclear reactor design; for 10 years head of the team “Thermohydraulics” responsible for the thermal and hydraulic design of steam generators and heat exchangers for nuclear power stations; for 23 years head of the team responsible for the hydraulic development of centrifugal pumps, during some years also responsible for the mechanical development group. Since retirement pump consultant. JF Gülich has published numerous contributions and holds several patents on centrifugal pumps and steam generators for nuclear power plants.

Ok, fair disclosure first. I used to work with the author and I also helped him translate the English version from the original German text. So obviously I'm biased. With that in mind read on.

This book is extremely comprehensive and rigorous, far more so than any other book I have encountered on centrifugal pump design. If you are looking for an easy glossy read on "general" pump concepts this isn't the book you want. It is packed to the gills with design information, methods and formulae, making it a difficult to "skim".

However if you are looking for detailed insight and guidance on how to predict, design and interpret pump performance, this is the book for you. I don't agree with everything in the book, but the vast majority of the advice is accurate and functionally useful.

If you want to start your own pump company, rerate other people's pumps or simply really understand what makes centrifugal pumps tick look no further...

Gülich's "Centrifugal Pumps Second Edition" is an essential text on the subject of centrifugal pump design and is truly a landmark publication. It is the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference available on the subject. While page count is in no way indicative of quality or usefulness, the 34 pages of foreword followed by 964 pages of main content is worthy of mention. Nearly half of the book is devoted to pump hydraulics, performance and design. Chapter 3, "Pump hydraulics and physical concepts," contains a masterful compendium of all essential equations needed for one-dimensional pump performance evaluation. I know of no other reference providing such a complete and practical package of pump hydraulics formulae. Charts, tables, diagrams, pump and component sectionals, 3D solids renderings, and photos are high quality and of a consistent format throughout the book. The paper, printing and binding of the book are of an archival quality look and feel. Every important topic in the book is summarized in tabular form. 120 useful tables are provided throughout the book for parameters and definitions, geometry and shapes, equations and formulae, data, characteristics, diagrams, diagnostics, problems and remedies, properties, and procedures. A pump engineer, especially early in his or her career, will save valuable time searching elsewhere for the information that's available in this book.
