Review

`...contains information on how to attain and maintain optimum performance from centrifugal pumps and offers an approach diagnosing and solving pumps.'
Civil Engineering

From the Author

This book contains comprehensive information on how to attain and maintain optimum performance from centrifugal pumps. It contains critical information that can benefit anyone from the novice to the experienced researcher. A wide range of ways for modifying and improving the performance of existing pumps are discussed. Safety measures required at the early stages of design are emphasized. The book provides guidelines on the selection and purchase of pumps that encompass a wide spectrum of situations. This includes features of materials and workmanship required to improve quality control. There is an indepth discussion of the numerous potential problems that may be encountered during testing. The pump-attendant will find here the basic information required for detecting early signs of developing malfunctions and a very comprehensive checklist of the potential problems and their causes. The maintenance personnel will learn which remedial means to follow if unanticipated problems occur.

Besides providing much needed information (some of which cannot be found in any other book on the same subject), this book dispels certain deeply rooted misconceptions, which haunt the pump industry to this very day. For example: It dispels the notion that the blade-tip angle is the most significant design-parameter of a centrifugal pump (see the test data presented in Fig. 1-4 of the book). It also dispels the notion that the suction capability is linked to the specific speed of a pump (see the test-data shown in Fig. 6-5). This book also clears up the existing confusion related to the effects of recirculation in centrifugal pumps (chapter 9).
