Book Description

September 1, 2007
For more than 200 years, Thomas Traherne's Centuries of Meditations was undiscovered and unpublished. The manuscript passed through many hands before finally being compiled into a book by bookseller and scholar BERTRAM DOBELL (1842-1914) in 1908. Centuries is a collection of poems written to express the rapture of life lived in accordance with God. Yet Dobell is careful to state that even though Traherne was a clergyman, there is plenty of beauty to be found in his poetry that does not require specific belief in Christianity or in God. Readers of many ages and persuasions will be touched by Traherne's passages on love and belonging. English author THOMAS TRAHERNE (1636-1674) received a master's degree in arts and divinity from Brasenose College, Oxford. He worked as a parish priest in Credenhill and wrote a handful of books, including Christian Ethicks (1675) and Roman Forgeries (1673).

5.0 out of 5 stars This Review is For the Dobel Edition!, December 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Centuries of Meditations (Paperback)
WARNING! Amazon sticks reviews for one edition of a book under other editions. Presenting a review of the Dobel edition paperback as a review of the butchered OCR paperback edition amounts to outright lying on the part of Amazon! The Dobel edition published by Cosimoclassics (with the picture of the statue of an angel on the front) is a good edition. The unedited OCR edition is not. Unfortunately, Amazon will not allow me to review both editions! Nor do they give the publisher of the books. Don't accept anything that you would not have bought if you had looked at it in a bookstore. If you get a poorer edition than you ordered, return it and demand a full refund for the cost of the book and shipping both ways!

The text itself is good beyond my ability to describe. Traherne is a poet (although his meditations here are written as prose), a deep thinker, and a devout Christian.

WARNING: The Dobel edition may also be availabe in an OCR! The buyer must beware these days when ording books from Amazon.

A further warning: Amazon pictures accompanying a review may not be of the edition reviewed!
