5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Lantern, May 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Century 7035I Portable Propane Mighty-Lite Matchless Single Mantle Lantern (Sports)
I have had several Century products and lanterns over the years. All work well, and I like their stuff. This lantern is a little better then the previous similar product in a couple ways. One is the cage that goes around the glass is a little stronger, thicker, and the whole assembly seems a little more solid then the previous lantern I owned, and was stolen out of my tent - [...]! My previous lantern was on a small propane tank (not 16 oz type) which had it's own valve. I'm not sure, but this one might leak a very little when turned off. I turned it off a little tighter, and now it doesn't seem to leak, but the valve isn't as precise as my last one, with the turn off position a little "soft". For long term storage, I'd take the 16 oz bottle off. For a week of camping, no one would even notice. Also, hooked to a bigger tank, no one would notice, and you could turn the valve off anyway if you care. I thought the self lighter would be convienient, but so far I'm wrong on that one. The piezzo element doesn't fire, if the globe is filled with propane-it needs oxygen to fire. So, you have to keep snapping the thing before you turn on the valve, and hope it catches before the globe fills with propane. Its easier to just let the globe fill with propane, and use a lighter. Plus, the piezzo lighter could possibly interfere with the mantle. You have to be more carefull putting on the mantle, so that the piezzo element doesn't poke into the mantle when putting a new one on. All in all, I like the light, but probably would have preferred the non-piezzo one a little better (I could just cut the thing off, or bend it out of the way). The single lanterns burn 1/2 the amount of propane as the doubles, are lighter and smaller, replacement globes are cheaper, you only need to replace one mantle if it breaks, and they give off plenty of light for playing guitar by the camp fire, etc (if the fire is down to coals, etc). I normally use a headlight for reading at night (the Garity one is real bright, and has several settings, and batteries last forever - I couldn't recommend it higher). All in all, this is a great lantern, and I recommend it to anyone who is going camping.
