5.0 out of 5 stars get burnt by black metal's elite, March 9, 2001
This review is from: Century Black Summons...Firestarter (Audio CD)
this is not mtv material or top 40 material. this is the most elite black metal bands giving your ears a brass-knuckled beat-down one after another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential for Black Metal Beginners, March 24, 2011
This review is from: Century Black Summons...Firestarter (Audio CD)
I bought this CD a little over 10 years ago when I was still a fledgling black metal newcomer fresh out of high school. At the time I had only really discovered Tiamat's Wildhoney album and I really liked what I heard. I saw this compilation had Tiamat on it so I figured I would give it a shot.

I can say that because of this CD I now own pretty much every album by 90% of the artists on this compilation. I would probably not be enjoying old and new styles of Ulver and Katatonia right now without this relic. The bands on this compilation really shaped my outlook on metal music for over a decade now. Over the years my interests have splintered off into various genres of music such as prog, jazz, electronic, classical, or anything experimental but I really feel my roots lie in BLACK METAL.

This CD was the first true introduction into a style of music that was very personal to me. The classic Opeth opus Nectar sparked my interest later down the road to check out great bands like Camel. Arcturus' Wintry Grey and the Borknagar track's vocals made me become obsessed with Garm who I believe is probably the best voice in music today. I can't imagine the past 10 years of my life without listening to classics like Perdition City and The Sham Mirrors. I can thank Ulver for getting me both into black metal and electronic music. I'm thankful I heard Satyricon on here because I would never have gone and witnessed one of the best live black metal shows ever with Satyricon. Without hearing Einherjer's track, I would know nothing of Viking metal. Without Emperor and Mayhem's tracks I would have been deprived essential black metal and a really odd piece of early 90's history of church burnings and murders. Well, I could have done without those two things, but the music is amazing nonetheless.

I probably would have never made a pilgrimage to the most beautiful country in the world, Norway, without listening to these cold northern tunes. This CD changed my life. Thank you black metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive..., August 17, 2000

Excellent tracks on this disc.Arcturus -Wintery grey.I have always loved arcturus very melodic and way of getting deep into the soul of the listener .Way no other black metal band does.Another highlight of this album is opeth another potent band.Excellent vocalist.IF you pick up this disc it will be worth it.IT in the end pays for its self.Black metal is very enjoyable.Very instrumental some is and sometimes not given enough credit.I say this is a disc deserving of a higher rating then just 5 stars .ARCTURUS alone deservers 10 on its own. Buy now and enjoy it later.
