Book Description

May 2005
This important and up-to-date electronic book on DVD-ROM provides a comprehensive guide to government information on hybrid cars and green vehicles, designed to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. According to automakers, consumers who care about fuel economy will have a dozen hybrid cars and trucks to choose from within the next few years. They combine the best features of the internal combustion engine with an electric motor and can significantly improve fuel economy without sacrificing performance or driving range. HEVs are primarily propelled by an internal combustion engine, just like conventional vehicles. However, they also convert energy normally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor. The electric motor is used to assist the engine when accelerating or hill climbing and in low-speed driving conditions where internal combustion engines are least efficient. Som! e HEVs also automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restart it when the accelerator is pressed. Unlike all-electric vehicles, HEVs now being offered do not need to be plugged into an external source of electricity to be recharged; conventional gasoline and regenerative braking provide all the energy the vehicle needs. Contents include: Department of Energy Hybrid Car and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Side-by-Side Comparisons, How Hybrids Work, Tax Incentives, DOE Hybrid Electric Vehicle Research Program * Information on current models, including Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Honda Civic, Chevy Silverado, Ford Escape, and GMC Sierra. EPA Fuel Economy Guides by Brand and Model, with current and historical data; EPA ratings for greenhouse gas emissions and data on green vehicles * Alternative Fuel vehicles * Advanced Technologies * Gas Mileage Tips * Crash Test Results * EPA Office of Transportation and Air Quality * National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) CAFE Standards data, studies and legislation (Corporate Standard Fuel Economy). This incredible DVD-ROM is packed with over 123,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. Our news and educational CD-ROM and DVD-ROM discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc format makes a great reference work and educational tool. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This DVD-ROM disc is for use in a computer DVD drive. The files can be accessed from the File Explorer in the same way that you open files from a CD-ROM disc; the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM formats are functionally the same, but the DVD has more than six times greater storage capacity. Of course, this disc cannot be “played” in a DVD player connected to a television set. It contains computer-formatted data, not video.

2.0 out of 5 stars Collection of Government Articles, April 3, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 21st Century Complete Guide to Hybrid Cars and Green Vehicles: Department of Energy and EPA Comparisons, Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, How Hybrids ... Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions (DVD-ROM) (DVD-ROM)
One should always read the product description carefully--I didn't.

As far as I can see, this is a collection of publically available government documents, most (all?) available on www.fueleconomy.gov.

The description clearly says this. It just didn't sink in for me. So if you want a copy of all the articles on one DVD (maybe for searching purposes), then this is for you. Otherwise, the same information is available on the web.
