Book Description

April 8, 2002
This electronic book on CD-ROM presents the tragedy of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, as documented by the U.S. Navy and other federal agencies. This CD-ROM on the "day that will live in infamy" is extensively illustrated with photography, charts, graphs, and maps; United States and Japanese Aerial Photography is featured. The remarkable photography documents the carnage of Pearl Harbor: the explosions, fires, sinkings, and wreckage of ships, aircraft, and facilities. Also documented are the firefighting, rescue and salvage efforts. The coverage features a listing of all 101 vessels in or near Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Each of the ships damaged in the attack are profiled, led by the eight battleships: USS Arizona, USS California, USS Maryland, USS Nevada, USS Oklahoma, USS Pennsylvania, USS Tennessee, and USS West Virginia.

Coverage includes all Vessel Attack Reports and Photographs, Vessel Damage, Salvage, and Repair Reports and Photographs, and Commander Reports on the Attack for each Command. Charts of Ship Positions are provided. Comprehensive casualty lists are included. An extensive "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) section addresses a wide range of issues related to Pearl Harbor. Aircraft Damage Reports are included for aircraft damaged in the attack. Japanese Forces, including their six aircraft carriers, aircraft, and midget submarines are the subject of comprehensive reports and photography. Oral Histories and Reports by Survivors are featured, as are Timelines and Narratives. Report subjects also include Medical Activities, the Raid Aftermath, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Pearl Harbor Attack, and Coast Guard Units in Hawaii.

Extensive coverage including photography is provided regarding the important figures of December 7 including Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr., Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, Admiral William S. Pye, and Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, as well as Japan's Admiral Yamamoto and Vice Admiral Nagumo. Medal of Honor winners for Pearl Harbor action are listed and profiled; their profiles are also illustrated with photographs. Other honorees, including Navy Cross recipient Cook Third Class Doris Miller, are the subject of coverage including photography.

An amazingly detailed resource is the Submerged Cultural Resources Study of the USS Arizona Memorial illustrated with extensive photography, diagrams, and tables. The USS Arizona Memorial is a featured subject, the coverage extensively illustrated with color photography. The USS Utah Memorial is also covered. Another feature is a Pearl Harbor Self-Guided Tour of Historic Sites extensively illustrated with photography. The premiere of the movie "Pearl Harbor" is featured, including an extensive color photography gallery. The 2001 Pearl Harbor Memorial event is covered with reports and photography.

Important documents include the following: U.S. Cryptologic History: Pearl Harbor Revisited; Pearl Harbor Revisited: U.S. Naval Communications Intelligence, 1924-1941; Pearl Harbor Operations: Japanese Monograph; U.S. Navy Code Words of World War II; U.S. Navy in Hawaii 1826-1945: An Administrative History; Warships Associated with World War II in the Pacific; U.S. Navy World War II Abbreviations; President Franklin Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor Speech; and Battleships: Overview.
