not as good as A True Mob Story...,
By david (representing for the champions, LAKERS!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Century of the Dragon (DVD)
Triad action drama from Wong Jing(uhh...i despise him sometimes) features Andy Lau as Fei-Lung, an aging legendary triad boss who's been straight for years. accompanying him is his right-hand man, Sing (Louis Koo), who's really an undercover cop assigned to watch Fei-Lung. Sing develops a respect for Fei-Lung and doubts his current involvement in anything shady. However, everything is brought to a head when Hung Hing head Pao (Anthony Wong) is injured, leaving a void in the group's top spot. The men all went Fei-Lung to lead them, but he doesn't want back in.Man (Patrick Tam), Pao's son, who decides he wants Hung Hing to be his and proceeds to double-cross everyone to achieve his goals. Simultaneously, Sing is hounded by an retaded evil new superior members who proceeds to act like a complete idiot and threaten his own men at every turn. When certain terrible events take place, Fei-Lung must decide whether to go the triad route and wreak revenge on Man, and Sing must decide whether he can take down his own boss. Very typical triad movie...i am a huge fan of the genre but was not satisfied. One good thing of the movie is probably Louis Koo,who should forevermore be known as HK's new triad leading man. His intensity and charisma serve him well in this role and he manages to overshadow Andy Lau, who turns in a relatively unremarkable performance (his performances have been very good recently). And Wong Jing's way of making movies are just bad...sometimes acceptable and fun but you know, one can get tired of it...so if you are fan of the genre..check it out...if not...go watch The Duel or Purple Storm

Disappointing undercover cop saga,
By
This review is from: Century of the Dragon (DVD)
1999's Century of the Dragon is a disappointing entry in the Hong Kong undercover cop genre, with Louis Koo's cop more interested in trying to make sure that Andy Lau's reformed triad boss isn't drawn back into the old life rather than arresting him. Naturally things come to a head when Lau's replacement, Anthony Wong, is paralysed after being set up and shot by a cop and his ruthless son Patrick Tam stirs things up among the triads to get what he thinks his dad was cheated out of by Lau. It's not an unpromising set-up, but it's pretty mundane stuff thanks to a largely unimaginative execution. Aside from one shocking moment of violence involving another undercover cop's child and a scene where Lau's wife decides to take on some would-be kidnappers with kitchen knives rather than wait to be rescued there's not much here to make it stand out from the crowd, while the film looks like they didn't have enough money to finish post-production - the sound quality is highly variable with frequent camera noise making it clear that they didn't do much ADR on the Cantonese soundtrack. Lau is superb, but there's not much reason to see this one if you've seen even a handful of Hong Kong cop movies.

Typical Gang Style Movie,
By A Customer
This review is from: Century of the Dragon (DVD)
This is sort of the type of movie people expect about gang war. Andy Lau star as a semi-retired gang leader who's good friend Anthony Wong (also a clan of the gang) was injuried during a brawl. Anthony's Son star by Patrick Tam wasn't satisfy with Andy being the gang leader and taking all the credits for his father's work. He decided to take revenge on Andy Lau. Andy Lau's left hand assistance starred by Louis Koo plays as an under cover cop trying to nail Andy Lau's crime. The story basically talks about Patrick's revenge and how Andy try to rescue his family and not get caught by Louis at the same time
