I first thought that the sticks would be too hard to strike with or too padded for the true feel of impact. Not the case. The sticks are light weight, close enough to fighting weight, and padded just enough so that you and your sparring partner know and react accordingly to being hit without the broken bones and lacerations. A great tool to reinforce lessons.

This review is from: Foam Escrima Stick (Misc.)
I've given this item 2 and a half stars, due to its inexpensive cost and possible alternative uses.
But as far as the padding is concerned, it's insufficient. The foam is not thick enough to insulate its plastic core. When hit with this foam stick, it leaves a sharp pain - interrupting your drills, your techniques and even your sparring. I've been hit with this foam stick on the back of my hand, wrist and forearm, leaving behind red marks and causing significantly sharp pain. During the sparring portion of training, the head is a major target and I can tell you that being hit in the head with this foam stick, is very painful! At one point I had to pop the end cap of the foam stick back into place, as it came off and got caught in the foam tubing, during one training session. If anyone has to use this, it should be adults and NOT kids - as there are some schools that teach Kali to younger students as well. I also own Lamenco Escrima padded sticks and they cause nowhere near the amount of pain you receive with these 'foam escrima sticks'. As for alternative uses, I can use them as striking targets (with someone else holding them)... for bare knuckle punching, as well as, kicking - instead of a speed bag or heavy bag. I'm sorry, but I cannot recommend this item. |
