Book Description

May 31, 2011
Forty-nine percent of all Americans start their day with a bowl of cereal. It’s the third most popular grocery item in the United States. Edward Daly, the Wilt Chamberlain of cereal consumption, has lovingly sampled every boxed breakfast he could get his hands on, penning humorous, pop-culture inspired analyses of each brand and its packaging.

Upon losing his Wall Street job during the financial meltdown, Daly, a lifelong cereal connoisseur, took it upon himself to search out and eat every cereal on the market, having the boxes and variations of rolled oats, grains, flakes, marshmallows and puffs photographed, resulting in this humorous book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What to do when laid off... May 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
Ed Daly responded to the current recession rounds of layoffs from major jobs by responding to an idea that has many permutations. Instead of staring off into space wondering what to do with his time and his mind now in the idle mode, he turned his attention to a topic that is tied to the desperation of consumerism, but is also a topic dealing with his favorite meal of the day - Breakfast. In this beautifully conceived and designed book Daly (with the aid of photographer Hermes Parga and the imaginative backing of Mark Batty Publisher) surveys every form of breakfast cereal, shares with us the five indices of Taste, Sugar, Sodium, Calories, and Fat, ranks them in ascending batches of sugar content (that is his method for creating chapters!), and then page by page he takes on an examination of the box covers, the 'advertising device phrases' (such as 'kid-tested/mother approved' for KIX, 'Hannah Montana multi-grain secret identity cereal', etc), the art work design, the 'image' the cereal is trying to create (using Paul Newman, repeated use of the heart symbol, etc), and the reputation of the manufacturer of each cereal on the market.

But despite (or in addition to) all of this interesting information, the main focus of this smart book is the hilarious commentary Ed Daly offers - at times a bit on the dark side, at times emphasizing the effects of the cereals on body functions (!), but always with a dollop of truth and comedy mixed well and served with bits of honey, cinnamon, fake fruity flavors, semblances of styrofoam, etc. Few books give the reader as much entertainment AND information about the vast array of breakfast cereals that fill the shelves of our markets today. It is a little book of magic - and a terrific gift for folks whose sense of humor and parody need stoking. Grady Harp, May 11
