3.0 out of 5 stars Not really a study guide. More of a practice test.
I purchased this book to help me study for certification in microbiology. I found that it is just a bunch of practice questions. The practice questions are great as a way to see what the test will be like, but not good for finding all the info needed to study. 5.0 out of 5 stars BOC Study Guide 5th Edition, February 26, 2011
This review is from: Board of Certification Study Guide for Clinical Laboratory Certification Examinations (BOR Study Guides) (Paperback)
This book is amazing. It a one of a kind study guide that has really helped me. This book is not just one big book filled with reading material, like a study guide you would use or see in school. It is filled with questions that might be asked on your certification exam and includes an answer key at the end of every section you complete with fully detailed answers to why that answer is correct.

The following subjects include:

Blood Banking : blood products, blood group systems, physiology and pathophysiology, serology, and transfusions. Chemistry : carbohydrates, acid-base balance, electrolytes, proteins and other nitrogen-containing compounds, heme derivatives, enzymes, lipids and lipoproteins, endocrinology and tumor markers, TDM and toxicology, quality assessment, laboratory mathematics, and instrumentation. Hematology: erythrocytes-pathology, erythrocytes-disease states, erythrocytes-laboratory determinations, leukocytes-physiology, leukocytes-disease states, leukocytes-laboratory determinations, platelets-physiology, platelets-disease states, platelets-laboratory operations, hemostasis, and hematology laboratory operations. Immunology: autoantibody evaluation, infectious disease serology, protein analysis, and cellular immunity and histocompatibility techniques. Microbiology: preanalytical and susceptibility testing, aerobic gram-positive cocci, gram-negative bacilli, aerobic gram-negative cocci, aerobic or facultative gram-positive bacilli, anaerobes, fungi, mycobacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, and parasites. Molecular biology: molecular science, molecular techniques, and applications of molecular testing. Urinalysis and body fluids: Urinalysis-pre-analytical examination, urinalysis-chemical examination, urinalysis-complete examination, urine physiology, and other body fluids. Laboratory operations questions: QA, safety, management, laboratory mathematics, instrumentation and general laboratory principles, education and communication, and laboratory information systems.

So, needless to say there is a ton of great studying material in this book. I would not spend any money on any other books, but this one. There are several that professors recommend, but in my personal opinion this and the clinical flash cards are the only thing you need to spend your money on for the certification exam. Hope this book helps you as much as it has helped me.

I purchased this book to help me study for certification in microbiology. I found that it is just a bunch of practice questions. The practice questions are great as a way to see what the test will be like, but not good for finding all the info needed to study. I recently purchased Microcards: Review Cards for Medical Students and Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. Both are great tools for studying.

I LOVE THIS STUDY GUIDE!!!! THE QUESTIONS ARE EXTENSIVE AND COVER A THRU Z. THE ANSWERS ARE INFORMATIVE AND NOT BORING. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS STUDY GUIDE TO ANYONE PREPARING TO TAKE A MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY TEST (WHETHER IT IS FOR A STATE LICENSURE TEST OR ASCP, ETC,,.

2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe Helpful?, November 16, 2011

When studying for my boards I used this book and thought it was pretty good. I liked how the questions have answers and explanations. It was also helpful that each subject was broken down into core topics so you were aware of your strengths and weaknesses. However, after I took my exam I realized this book was nothing like the actual test. This review book has a lot of obscure questions that the exam doesn't even go near. The exam was extremely practical with "what would you do when..." questions and I feel that this book does a poor job of preparing you to think the way the exam required. Having said that, I did pass the first time around but my own study guides were much more helpful.

This book isn't useful for studying for the cytogenetics or molecular tests (besides the general lab operations section). Entire book is sample questions and answers for every section besides those two.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Questions, but way too many typos!!!, July 24, 2010
This review is from: Board of Certification Study Guide for Clinical Laboratory Certification Examinations (BOR Study Guides) (Paperback)
I am currently studying for my CLS examination and reading through this book. I feel as if this book was not proof read at all. There are misspellings, missing words, missing graphs/tables and answers in the back that do not correlate with the question it is supposed to accompany.

This book is a good review for the boards. It asks questions from every area in Clinical Laboratory which helps the student in identifying any area there needs to be further review. It also helps in certain sections where it explains the why the answer choice is correct.

3.0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough, but not necessary, December 22, 2009
This review is from: Board of Certification Study Guide for Clinical Laboratory Certification Examinations (BOR Study Guides) (Paperback)
This book was basically a waste of my money, and we all know CLS students have no money... :-) I flipped through it once, then carried it with me for a month thinking I would use it to study. The sheer amount of questions was overwhelming (some single sections had more than 300 questions), moreso than the thought of actually taking the BOR exam! Well... I didn't touch it again. I used my lecture notes, exams, and review questions (all program material) to prepare for the board exam and passed with no problems. So... it may be a good book, but it wasn't worth the money for me.

I first want to know if the book I purchased is the new version that is updated.
When did you get the nwe book at Amzon?
If I am asking this question because I saw that there is a section they are calling Molecular pathology, in my book is molecular biology? is it the same or different? On my book there are two ISBN numbers: ISBN-13: 978-0891895879 and ISBN-10: 0891895876 whereas on the new one is only the first ISBN number.
In the new version did they add new questions or the questions are the same? Just in case I purchased an old version can I exchange the book to get a new one? What do I do?
The book maybe would be more interesting if they had some summary on the Key topics like in the [[Assin: ISBN: 978-0-9670434-2-5 Clinical Laboratory Science Review a bottom line approach, fourth edition.]]

This study guide is nothing but question and answer. I wasn't aware of this until after I received it, so just fyi for those looking for something different. It has good questions with the answers in the back but no reading, etc.
