Book Description

June 26, 1998
If you are or are planning to become a professional computer technician, chances are you will be required to pass the A+ Certification Exam developed by CompTia. Most major computer manufactures and resellers including CompUSA, Packard Bell, Intel, Hewlett Packard, Apple, Compaq, and Microsoft now require all of their service employees to be A+ certified. As a result, the number of applicants taking the exam has grown from 2,000 in the last half of 1993 when the test was first offered to more than 35,000 in 1996. In the first quarter of 1998, CompTIA will be revising the test. This revision will cover the new test.
-- Heavily illustrated with tons of pictures and examples.
-- Hundreds of sample questions provided in the book and on the CD-ROM.
-- Follows a unique, more practical system approach to teaching the concepts as well as preparing for the exam.
-- Updated to reflect the most current A+ revision.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

All-in-One A+ Certification Exam Guide is the best and most complete A+ study book available. The hardware information reflects modern equipment, and the Windows/DOS coverage includes Windows 95, which many A+ books neglect (of course it also covers DOS and Windows 3.x, which are still relevant).

Meyers attacks the PC architecture one piece at a time, beginning with the CPU (coverage extends through Pentium II) and continuing through power supplies, RAM (including DIMMs and SO-DIMMs), motherboards (through ATX), and the peripheral bus (covering Peripheral Component Interconnect, or PCI). The author covers disk drives, including all versions of SCSI through the various implementations of SCSI 3. Video information isn't absolutely current, but is adequate for the exam.

Meyers's coverage of networks includes 100BaseT LANs as well as older systems and TCP/IP. He even pays some attention to Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), both important when configuring networks of Windows machines.

Photos and cartoons back up Meyers's lucid prose adequately--even the cartoon bubbles emerging from pictures of hardware (showing how the CPU "talks to" the memory, for example) are informative. Some of the conceptual diagrams are a little confusing, but they're in the minority.

One of the most helpful features of this book is a chart that allows you to figure out how much time you should devote to studying each exam component, based on your experience with the topic. Further, the CD-ROM that comes with this book allows you to take exams in "practice mode," where you're given hints and referred to specific chapters for further study. --David Wall

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, January 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A+ Certification Exam Guide (Hardcover)
I would recommend this book to anyone planning to study for the A+ test. I studied using this book, Exam Cram and the Dummies book. This book offered detailed explanation on many complex aspects of computers. This book is written so that a person with an average understanding of computers is able to pick it up, read it and understand clearly what the author is conveying. The Exam cram book was useful after this one because it is written in far more advanced terminology and has less details. The Dummies book was on the other side of the spectrum, having too few details and not covering many complex aspects. Of all the Books I have seen to help prepare for the A+ test this one is definitely the best and should help anyone learn more about computers and how they operate. (I passed the Comptia test with 89% correct as a result of this book)

5.0 out of 5 stars A+ Certification, real cheap!, December 18, 1999

You don't have to spend thousands to become A+ Certified. In fact, you've just stumbled on one of certifications best kept secrets, Mike Myers "A+ Certification." PC guru Mike Myers has a nack for simplicication. He is one of the few technical writers who must have actually taken English in school. His insight and wit makes for easy, understandable reading without overwhelming the reader. His seasoned writing style keeps "Techno-babble" to a minimum while keeping substantive. The many pictures and photos keep the reading synchronized and easy to follow.

Most importantly, the book contains 2 CD-ROMs that give mock A+ tests and a reference. Since this book covers both A+ tests (Hardware/Software & DOS/Windows), the reader can resource any specific information the CD-ROMs without the book. This makes the book very convenient!

The only question Mike Myers' book leaves you with is what to do with all the money you saved by NOT going to an expensive tech school?

I suggest buying Mike Myers A+ Certification for anyone inspired to become A+. This book works!

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to spank the A+ Exam, November 20, 1999

I have been a technician for about 3 years, but realized that the A+ exam doesnt really test you on things you need to know. This book was all I used to study for it with. I read through it once, then scheduled my exam for 3 weeks away. It has 20 chapters so I read 1 chapter a night till the exam. I finished the core exam in 14 minutes with a 96 and the Windows/DOS in 19 minutes with a 93. The lady said she had never seen a score that high in that quick of time. This is the only book you need. Period.
