For many years, I have coordinated a study group for human resource individuals taking the PHR/SPHR certification test.

I would not recommend this book. There are statements and questions in the text that do not go into enough depth to be able to study from this book and pass the certification exam.

One example can be found on page 350, question 8, "Which of the following injuries or illnesses is considered work-related?" Under OSHA you have "reportable" and "recordable" accidents. The wording in the question is not complete.

Another example is "disparate impact". The term is defined with two lines of text within the book, however, no examples or details are given on how to determine if there was disparate impact.

I have heard from other certified individuals in our local area who purchased this book and will not use it as a source of study to pass the PHR/SPHR certification exam.

I took the PHR/SPHR certification class. The class did not prep me all that well. I relied on reading & re-reading the textbooks and the HRCI Cert. Guide. The questions in the Cert. Guide were extremely useful because they were very similar to the questions I had on the PHR exam. I disregarded the rest of the book. All in all, a very smart & useful purchase.

The HRCI is an incestuous organization more interested in financially preying on others in the HR community than actually sharing HR knowledge. If it were not so, they would not charge such exhorbitant fees for their learning systems and guides. The pracitce questions and answers in this guide may help prepare for the PHR/SPHR exam, but you should see if you can find a used copy or borrow one, rather than buy a new copy. While the HRCI will tout "new content", it isn't worth the cost of the new copy.
