Study guide review and a WARNING!,
This review is from: ACSM's Certification Review (Paperback)
If you are planning on getting your personal training certification through ACSM, then I would highly recommend this book as an excellent study guide for using as part of your overall study plan when preparing for the exam. Just to warn everyone...there is a ton of information in this review guide, and yes alot of it will be on the exam. I particulary liked the layout of the information presented, as it was well-organized and structured in a way that you can find a specific topic quickly without having to search through the entire book. Another fair WARNING TO ALL, especially people new to the personal training industry... This book, this certification, and really any certification that I know of does not cover the business side of p.t. and does not teach any type of selling skills what-so-ever. I've been training for about six years(I had NSCA when I first started), and I cannot stress enough how important it is to know how to sell yourself and your services to customers and clients. If you're a trainer in a health club you should, without a doubt, take a serious look at The Personal Training Sales Education Textbook: A simple and effective sales system designed specifically for the personal trainer in the health club. (Volume 1). I read this book years ago and the selling system they talk about was responsible for me being able to quit my other job and start training full-time, and signing up more clients than I could handle. There are some other good business books on the market also that deal with personal training outside a health club, but this by far the best book I've ever read pertaining to selling in health clubs. So, get your certification and learn everything there is to know about exercise and fitness, but do not forget you are also going to be doing a lot of selling whether you like it or not. Might as well get good at it! Best of luck, Nathanial R. Jones CSCS, ACSM-CPT, RCEP

Very well written, concise. Important points noted in bold type. Very thorough and detailed information. Probably have gained more knowledge from the review than from the other textbooks and reference information originally used for education.

Fine for the exam, but chocked full of errors,
This review is from: ACSM's Certification Review (Paperback)
Read through ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer cover-to-cover first, then go through this review guide (minus the last two chapters), and take all of the chapter review quizzes and you should be fine on the CPT exam. This text has tons of typos and even some wrong answers for the quizzes (just the answer letter is wrong--the explanations give you the correct answer), but as a whole, it does the trick for preparing you for the exam.A few caveats; if you don't know your way around a gym, you will miss a lot of questions on the CPT exam, as neither this text nor ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer cover spotting techniques or discuss which free-weight exercises work which muscles. Also, the ACSM CPT exam is very clinical in nature, making it one of the more difficult CPT exams out there. As long as you review the textbooks, though, the exam shouldn't be too difficult. Good luck!

I needed this book to pass the acsm test and it arrived very quickly. I think the book was a good review but I dont feel that any of the questions that were in the book were even on the test.

Great purchase for anyone preparing for an ACSM certification. The book came in on time, and it contains a lot of useful information without any useless stuff in between.

Not Really for Personal Trainer,
By J Walter (Richmond, Virginia) - See all my reviews

I bought this preparing for the exam for personal trainer certification. It is more designed for the Health/Fitness cert. I wasted a lot of time in it before I realized its lack of usefulness. The vocab is riduculous in my opinion and as such reduces the practical (non-exam prep) value of the book.

This book was ordered per suggestion by professor. the book was cheaper on Amazon, plus free shipping was great. I have not taken the certification exam yet, so I will let you know how that goes.
