This is an excellent reference book to use with your other A+ study guides. For anyone wanting to get the proper materials to study with, this is one of them you should have.

I used the book to help pass my A+ tests, but there were several shortcomings. First, some of the info was wrong, such as the Cyrix DLC processor including a FPU. Also, the writing style is worse than an encyclopedia. It's simply too dry to keep your attention, but the book is nice to have around as a reference manual. The CD that comes with the book is of some value in preparing for the test, provided you unlock it for extra money. The problem is that the test program has bugs that incorrectly graph scores and give error messages during scoring, and some of the diagrams do not match the questions. In addition, some of my answers to the questions were marked wrong when, according to the book, my answer was right. Looking on the web site provided an errata for the book (which didn't mention the Cyrix CPU), but there was no patch to fix the test CD. Talk about a defective product! Finally, the book is unneccesarily detailed in some cases, such as CPU pins config, but not detailed enough in other cases. Again, its better as a reference manual than an exam prep, especially because of the problems with the CD, which could have been a great prep if done right.

A fair reference book with lab exercises that add value.,

This book must not be used as a sole source for A+ study! Overall, this book will add value when combined with your other A+ certification study guides and references. That added value comes from the lab exercises. However the CD is a waste and is no than a marketing ploy. The graphics are noteworthy but some key concepts are buried in the text.

This book is of absolutely no use to anyone looking to actually LEARN something. CD was even more useless -- shouldn't have even bothered taking up space.

Good book but cheesy CD,

I found the book good in preparing for the A+ exam and as a reference for computer repair. My one complaint is the concept of offering only 50 sample questions/answers on the CD and trying to sell a full set of study questions. The book costs enough to start with, why is that nonsense necessary?

BUY IT ONLY IF YOU DON'T NEED IT !!!!,

I expected something really comprehensive and exaustive but what you get is not sufficient to get you anywhere, you will always need some other text to understand what the author is referring to. For example, a subject is introduced to the reader like this "this matter is divided into three major sections, A, B, C." But then you'll get everything on A, and "something" else until you reach the end of the chapter, and where B finishes and C starts is entirely up to you!!! Another MAJOR CRITICISM: complete lack of consistency in terminology! once you get around that one the book is ok (I suppose), but you are really expected to have a fairly good idea about every single topic. OTHER PROBLEM: some simple topics are treated as if you didn't know ANYTHING, and at the same time the major and more technical ones are treated as if you already knew and needed only a refresh course! I DID REGRET spending all that money, especially because I have none left and I really wanted to take this exam!! BEWARE!

WEALTH OF INFORMATION!,

With the new A+ certification exam due out in August and windows 95 covering 70% of the dos\windows module I found this book to cover what I expect. There are 25 questions after each chapter( not including the lab section ) This book is very large and informative. The CD that comes with the book will cost an additional $50 to unlock the access code and has the whole book on the CD with more questions. It will evaluate you progress and take you straight to the book for reference with problem questions. Overall, I do believe if I master this book I will be well prepared!
