Too many Errors,
By A Customer
This review is from: A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exams (Test Yourself (Berkely, Calif.).) (Paperback)
This book was my last addon book to study with. Exam Cram,Dummies, and Dali software got me a 90/core,95/Dos-win score on the test. I had the first edition of this book and it was loaded with errors, had to spend time going to web site and finding each question that was incorrect and then updating to the correct answer...this should have all been done b4 this book was sold.A few ques hit where other books hadn't, but lots of others were not helpful at all, especially some of the ambiguous multi-answer ones. There were still some errors that werent even in the error log. Too much money and fix it time, not enough help to make up for it. Jett

Not Like The Test At All!,
By
This review is from: A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exams (Test Yourself (Berkely, Calif.).) (Paperback)
I was hesitant when I purchased this book but not having worked in the IT industry before, I wanted to get as much help as possible. The questions in the 2nd edition could be insightful and helpful to some folks, but this book did nothing but frustrate me. After a few months of studying other books and material from several web sites, I was seeing material in this book for the first time. And guess what! That material was not on the exam! Save your money and stick with the A+ For Dummies and Mr. Meyer's A+ Certification books.

Do you want to be paralyzed by fear?,
By A Customer
This review is from: A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exams (Test Yourself (Berkely, Calif.).) (Paperback)
If I could, this book would get 0 Stars. Their style of writing and answering the questions was inconsistant at best, and downright deceptive at worst. Some questions ask for multiple answers, others that need more than one answer do not indicate it. If your real desire was to be paralyzed by fear that you may leave out a possible answer on the test, then this is the book for you. By the time that I got to the last tests in this book, I was so afraid of not checking enough answers, or checking too many, that I just flipped to the answers and looked it up. There are a whole slew of practice tests out there. Pay to unlock that questions on the CD in the Michael Myers book, or find another resource. You will learn more, and have more confidence.

An excellent resource, in spite of some errors,
By A Customer
This review is from: A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exams (Test Yourself (Berkely, Calif.).) (Paperback)
I have been finding this book to be an excellent means of gauging my readiness for the A+ test and pointing out my weak areas. There are a few errors. ( I suppose anything covering this breadth of information tends to have some errors and gaps) In the section on laser printers the author asks in what step the image is put on the paper. The answer key say it is "writing", when in fact it is "Transfer". I have also found a few questions where the answer is inverse to the question. for instance it will ask "which of the following are NOT ___" and the answer will be as if the question was written as "which of the follwing ARE___". some questions are confusing as to what they are asking, though I would assume this may be an effort to better prepare you for the actual test. this book made it obvious that neither of the two study guides I had bought had a chapter on portable computers, which is 10% of the test. As with any of these certification books, if it says something that does not sound right, check it out with another source. I suggest selecting study materials from several publishers in order to fill in any potential gaps.

I used this book to prepare for my A+ exam. I found it very useful. I also found it useful as a supplement to my classroom teaching

Good test of your knowledge, but many errors,
By A Customer
This review is from: A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exams (Test Yourself (Berkely, Calif.).) (Paperback)
This book has only practice exam questions. The format of the book questions is different than the ones on the actual test-all of the questions on these practice exams could have multiple answers, however I found only a few of multiple answer questions on my A+ exam(I passed - 92/90). There are also many errors. The practice exams are actually a good test of your PC knowledge. The questions are slightly different that the ones on the actual test. If you really have a good understanding of PC's then these questions will help you review what may be on the test.

Obsolete 1998 Edition,

This review is from: A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exams (Test Yourself (Berkely, Calif.).) (Paperback)
This book is a mediocre test prep book churned out for the 1998 test objectives.Since then, the A+ exams have been revamped and rewritten several times over. As of July CompTIA is dumping the adaptive exam structure in favor of linear testing. Given the changes, and the new technology coming down this year (PCI express, Serial ATA, Serial SCSI, etc), I wouldn't recommend this book as a primary study aid.

Disappointing, just disappointing,

This review is from: A+ Certification Test Yourself Practice Exams (Test Yourself (Berkely, Calif.).) (Paperback)
According to the publishers of this book, they had hoped to publish a cheaper, more efficient guide to the A+ exams, but I think that they cut out too much, and slapped too many things together haphazardly. Each section contains at best a couple REALLY brief pages about a certain topic (say EIDE for example), and then suddenly throw some questions at you that are often unclear, and have an odd structure to them (not to mention typos and errors that other reviewers have pointed out). I definitely doubt that the real questions on the A+ exam are this tough or have this sort of format because people would surely revolt. The worst gripe of all was the supposed "free test exam software" that you can download from their website. Its very difficult to find, and not that helpful since its always the same few questions. I did have to give this book 3 stars because it did accomplish its aim of being a "cram for the test" style book. If you need to just read the differences between different Pentium processors, for example, then this book will still help you. However, don't rely too much on the questions, they are just not worth it. If you have time to thoroughly study for the A+ exam, consider looking for another book, but if you need a quick review, then go ahead and pick up this book, but look elsewhere for self-testing resources.

This was a good book, however, the questions were much harder than the actual exam. I passed on the first try with a little help from this book. I also found the A+ exam prep and exam cram books published by coriolis to be quite helpful.

This book does have some merit. It did point out some of the things that I did need to study up on... IRQs, I/Os etc... Know them cold! But, it went about it in a manner that really pi***d me off. The manner in which questions needed to be answered was inconsistant. Several times the answer was just "Best Fit, single choice." and others, it was "Select all that apply" with no indications which was which.Overall I just used it as a method of pointing out where my weaknesses were, and you should not rely on it as an accurate representation of the actual exam. |
