Waiting for new edition from the same author!, January 28, 1999
This review is from: Certified Course in Visual Basic 4 (Paperback)
I purchased this book in Singapore years ago with the purpose of understanding the new development of Visual Basic 4.0 and getting the Certificate from the University of Phoenix. I was surprised by the good organization of the book. The author is not teaching you but is directing you how to use Visual Basic better. This is excellent for beginner and people with some basic knowledge in Visual Basic. You will find it useful! The other good thing is that no matter where you are in the world, you could earn the Certificate. This is exactly somekind of distance learning with good quality. The only things I was dissatisfied is that you could not earn Three Advanced Placement Credit as printed on the cover and you will only receive a transcript of your study. Anyway, I really hope that there would be a new book on Visual Basic 6.0 written by the same author with more lesson on Database, Multimedia, Windows API and Internet programming.

I'm sorry to say this . . . ., April 3, 1998

I was not overly impressed with this book. It seemed a little disorganized. There were things you learn in lesson 17 that could have been taught earlier giving new comers and faster sense of accomplishment. The book was easy to follow for the most part though. I must admit, I gave up on it at lesson 18. I switched to Visual Basic NightSchool for version 5.

Is there a site out here to find out the structures of the exercises in the book? I know the idea is for us to do it ourselves...but I get stuck! It's a great book and I'm on Chapter 5 now and can't wait til I KNOW this stuff.

Foundation(MEAT), September 30, 1997

Out of the 8 or so books for VB that I have browsed, Stephen's book was the tractor beam. It sucked me in because it had what I was looking for. When I want to learn something completely I want to start with quality foundation and build. Most books make allot of assumptions about things they think you obviously know. I am a programmer and I don't know how many times that VB books refer to historic things about VB that the writer assume you know. Stephens book is a "REAL" 1,2,3 approach. It also tells you more than just how, it really gives you the "Why's" about VB design philosophy and goals(CONCEPTS).

One of the best training books on programming I have read, February 21, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Certified Course in Visual Basic 4 (Paperback)
Whilst I am a computer professional I am not a programmer of any real consequence. I was keen though to learn how to program in VB so I could not only work in the generic language but it would give me a better understanding of Visual Basic for Applications as well. Although I am now working back through the text again to consolidate my learning I still find the book to be both informative as well as enjoyable to read. I found myself relating to the author more as a teacher who was standing with me as I worked. I have only one regret in buying this book and that was I bought it from a book shop in Australia but I could have save a lot of money by buying it from Amazon. If you want to learn VB I truly do recommend this book to you

GET IT !!!!!, January 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Certified Course in Visual Basic 4 (Paperback)
I've been using Visual Basic ever since it came on the programmers scene but I never found such an interesting book. Not only I discovered new VB4 features but also obtained a diploma once I completed the whole course. If you want to know more about VB4 and want also a title to show your boss or friends, get this book; it is worth the money.

Excellant Overview, August 22, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Certified Course in Visual Basic 4 (Paperback)
This book will give a person the overview neccessary to determine if one really WANT'S to continue learning programing. When you finish, a programmer you are not, but you are well on the way of becomming one, due to the concepts learned here. So, one of two things will happen. 1. You'll quit and not finish the book and not pursue self taught programing or no programing at all. 2. You will finish the book, and can't wait to get additional material to learn more. So, what are you waiting for ?
